wonder if it's due to writing/filming editing or due to characters availability, especially if they are trying to get some new prominent characters in season 2

It's about the renewal cycle.

Television needs you to watch every night to drive advertising revenue. So they typically balanced TV series schedules with Sport Seasons.

With Streaming, it's about convincing you to just keep paying monthly.

So they drop a Season of hit show then wait a few years and keep you paying by dropping another season of a different show.

They also don't want to invest in constant filming. So it's release then wait and see before green lighting. Broadcast, by the time your watching a season, the next season is already being filmed. With the older sitcoms, they typically filmed the week or two before they aired.
