For many years I have been looking for a way to tame the exhaust note a bit on my Cobra. It has SLP long tubes, off-road X-pipe and a Magnaflow catback, so it gets pretty rowdy when you get on it. First I researched other brands of catbacks but none seemed to make a notable difference. Then I started looking at adding a pair of resonators to the exhaust system. The easiest spot to add them would be between the headers and X-pipe, where the cats used to be but there's only about 11" of room and none of the resonators I could find would fit. Plus I'd likely lose some precious ground clearance.
The next logical position was in-place of the exhaust tips. After some careful measurements and much online research, I came up with this: a Vibrant 1141 Ultra Quiet resonator and a Flowmaster 15371 4" tip, carefully tig welded together.
Installed:
It's a tight fit around the gas tank and bumper but nothing is touching. The passenger side bolts right in but the drivers side required the charcoal cannister to be moved up 1".
The resonators are very small and have a straight-through design so I was only expecting a small difference but the sound reduction was HUGE! I don't have SPL measurements but it has to be at least 4-5 db and all the harsh raspyness is gone, I'm very happy with it! I'm 50 years old now so I can appreciate a quieter ride and less attention from the local constabulary. Plus I can hear the blower now!
