The factory coolant reservoir is not the most popular resident under the hood of the 2015 Ford Mustang. Whether it’s the style or the coloration, this functional hardware detracts from the beauty that is the modern-day Coyote engine. Fortunately, there are several aftermarket alternatives, and the latest is from Granatelli Motorsports.

A definite visual upgrade, Granatelli Motorsports’ new sheetmetal S550 coolant tanks offer an easy install because they use the stock hardware, hoses, and cap. These tanks are available with a black powdercoat or polished finish.

“The eyesore now nicknamed the ‘grenade’ by several on the Internet won’t win you any trophies in the engine compartment,” says the company. “The Granatelli unique design mimics the same taper and angle of the OE engine cover giving it a true stylized look while increasing capacity.”

This unit installs using the factory hardware, hoses, and cap, so it’s a direct fit, and you can choose tanks with black powercoat or polished finishes (PN 510100-P; $257 & PN 510100-B; $299).

You can check out the features and installation of the tank in this video…

What sets the GMS S550 coolant tanks apart from the others release thus far is an optional, integrate catch can that will help make your new Mustang legal for NHRA or SCCA competition.

As you can see, there are two versions of the tanks available, one version offers a feature that we haven’t seen on other parts, and it is a necessary addition for those planning to race their S550s on NHRA or SCCA race tracks—an integrated catch can (PN 510101-P $257 & PN 510101-B $299). That’s right, the factory reservoir will burp coolant if things get too hot and that makes for real trouble on the racetrack.
