Please help me save some money! Front ball joints?

The boots around my front upper ball joints are ripped, and at the dealer, instead of 'rebooting' them, they said to fix it, I'd have to replace the control arms - $541.98 for parts and labor!

Is there a cheaper way to get the same parts (FO5L3Z-3084-B and FO5L3Z-3085-B) or for this kind of price, is there a better aftermarket alternative?

Could I save money by installing the control arms myself? How hard is it?

Thanks

The trucks at the dealer getting an oil change, and new tires for the front end. I'm going to call them tomorrow morning to tell them yea or nay on the control arms - I just wasn't planning on spending this much right now.

Why are you paying dealership prices for new tires?

Moog makes aftermarket control arms but I do not know how they compare on price. The ball joints are replaceable on them so that if they wear out again you do not need to replace the whole a arm. I have a ball joint that needs replacing now and I am just waiting until I can replace them all at one time along with a drop.

Just replaced upper bjs, lower bjs, shocks, brakes and sway bar bushings.

MOOG makes some awesome upper balljoints that are greaseable and rebuildable. Ford balljoints are sealed (crappy) so you can't grease them. The lower balljoints need to be pressed in so you have to remove the A-arm.

I spent about $500 on parts and did it myself in about 15 hours at home with the truck on jack stands.

I was quoted $300 for labor which included alignment by a local shop. Did it myself so I know everything is done right but it was a PITA.

It is not really difficult just alot of work was involved in raising and lowering the springs shocks etc. I also did it at night which didn't help.

Balljoints need to be replaced when they have too much wear (play) making it impossible to align the truck. If the boot is simply broken they can last a little bit more.

Try the Haynes manual. It will give you the specs you need.

The shipping on the suspension parts are high though. I got all new front suspension pieces from a local auto parts store for a comparable price. Def go with the Moog parts.

Hmm! I just replaced these exact parts (both sides) and the cost was $1200 bucks, I don't have the ticket in front of me, but I think the labor was around $400, and the rest was parts. Oh yeah, I also had a linkage replaced, this was also a portion of the cost, but only around $100 bucks.

Wish I had the tools, I would def tried to save some $$$$$.

Good luck.

I'm going to pick up the truck today and park it until I order some new parts - I don't want to go shredding up my new tires. If I go with a foctory replacement style, now I know where to order them.

If I went aftermarket, what's out there? DJM was mentioned...are they just lighter, stronger, or better for a lowered L?

Thanks,
William
