What would you guys do?

Try and not be over the top ford/svt loyal here too.

I may have my Lightning sold by the end of the month, if so ill have around $18,000 in cash.

Right now i have a 99 v6 explorer limited with 194k miles for my DD and i hate it. Gets 15.9 mpg.

So I am thinking about getting our of the car scene for a while, but I really need something that handles and is somewhat quick and goes in all/most weather conditions.

Id like to keep my monthly payment around $200 (over 5 years) with the $18k as a down payment.

What car/truck/suv would you guys suggest?

My top choices so far are:

1. 2008 Jeep SRT8
2. F250 Diesel
3. WRX

Personally id rather have an SUV or truck because i dont like getting in and out of a car everyday(6'2" 230 lbs).

Thanks

- Sean

I've got an SRt8 Jeep and its a great daily/weekend vehicle. If you plan to do any long traveling it isn't the best. I think I get around 15mpg on the highway.

my buddy had an 07 that we took on a trip to florida from NJ. we got around 17 mpg highway. im used to poor gas mileage, as ive owned v8's since turning 17 and owned 2 lightnings.

i only mentioned the explorers mpg as an issue for not keeping it, some people see v6 and automatically think good gas mileage.

jeep is in the lead, but so far all the 08's with low mileage are $35k +

a few months ago i watched 2 08's with low mileage go for $29k

so far the jeep is my #1 choice, just seeing if anyone else had something that would be worth looking into.

Jeeps are great but very expensive (the SRT version is) WRX is not a bad bet seeing you live in an area that sees snow.

I say Jeep...but you'll get worse gas mileage than the explorer got.

i probably should have stated i didnt want a station wagon. if it was a coupe or sporty 4 door, it might be an option

if i was going to have a cobra/lightning on the side, then the SS could be an option

I have a TBSS as my DD, and I dont regret buying it for one second. I've gotten close to 19mpg when I'm not beating on it. Usually 15-16 though with quite a bit of around town driving, too. The SRT8 is nice, but I could never justify paying that much more for a used one... but if thats the only three choices, I'd go with the Jeep. With the money you save buying a comparable TBSS to an SRT8, you could mod that TB and eat those Jeeps up and STILL have money left over. Good luck with whatever you decide man!

Mini Cooper S

If you are looking for handling, power, and economy, the Mini Cooper S is the way to go. I have a 2007 that is tuned, and it is really quick. Still get 33 mpg combined city/highway, and I beat on it a lot. The handling is superb. I had to mod my L just to keep up with it, but the Mini will still get the L on top end. In the twisties there is no contest, the Mini wins hands down. In addition, the Mini holds its value.

if youre complaining about gas mileage of the explorer, why go to the jeep srt? not much better there...

id say f250 (18 mpg and diesel)

or something else other than whats posted there...

like an older TDI.. or honda CRV

the best route for all weather, best gas mileage would be the wrx... but you said you dont wannt get in and out of a car all day...

GL!

With 18k, I don't think you'l be finding an SRT-jeep, not close.

Best go with the f250, I think that's the smart choice.

i didnt mean for the MPG of the explorer to look as im complaining about it, just as a reason NOT to keep it. MPG doesnt bother me all that much, im used to it

If you re-read what i have in my original post, i said id put $18k DOWN and want my monthly payments around $200 (over 5 years).

so ill be looking at around $30,000 all together on a car.

you are getting out of the car scene and those are your choices?? there are much better adapted cars. first consider tires. for any of your choices you need to get a winter/ snow tire. why get a sports car as a DD? get a small 4wd suv or wagon. but if you had just the 3 to choose from, the subuaru would be my choice; aws and light, less likely to get stuck, and better fuel mileage than the rest. But you make up for the savings in fuel economy when a subuaru breaks. They are expensive to repair..

You could buy a used really nice 05 up F250 diesel with less than 100k on it, have the warranty till 100k and not have nearly the payment or no payment and be back in a hotrod quicker (as a toy that is) and have the tow pig already.

If your Lightning is slower then your Mini, then something is seriously wrong.

The SRT8 Jeep would be awesome for a DD. Fun all around DD, but just sorta crappy on the gas mileage. Get a tune for the Jeep and you'll be set.
