The only small rear engine car I was aware of was a 914.
Tom,
It is a 911. The early small bumper 911s (1965-1973) were lightweight 2200 lb. cars with a flat-six rear engine (the 912 had a 4-cyl. in the rear). The 914 actually has a mid-mounted engine (either a 4-cyl or the 2.0L flat-six).
In 1974, the 911 grew heavy with the federally mandated big rubber bumpers and the emissions regulations lowered the HP.
The 1965-1968 911s are short wheelbase cars with a 2.0L, and the 1969-1973 cars were long wheelbase (only a few inches longer) and had a 2.2L or 2.4L engine.
BTW Tom, the IMSA "Cobra R" class is looking to be a popular group. Gary bought 3 street Cobras last week for his customers. He is talking to a tire guy (Sassco) about using a spec tire. Street gas will be required. The big benefit of this group will be low racing costs.
Gary is testing this weekend at VIR with the Nasa group. He is teaching two guys from Charlotte for their vintage racing license (he is a HSR-approved instructor).

1971 Porsche 911, red race car
In a weak moment, I bought another car. Another race car is something that I didn't need. Especially when the engine is long gone.
It does have a logbook from two different racing series.
At least the color matches my other two track cars.
This from the guy who said he would never buy another race car! Doc, NEVER say never!!!
Cool "Porch", now what are you gonna do with it?

Doc,
Nice new ride. Were you driving your blue 73 911 near downtown yesterday? I thought I saw it.
Larry, that was me. Did you see a couple of Porsche 356's following me?

I just bought this for my youngest son. Older son still rolling in his BMW to college in 2 weeks.
Can you send me the paperwork to be your adopted son? I'll wash your car every week.
We had lunch at the OK Café and saw a vintage racer that invited us down to his warehouse off University Ave (near Turner Field). We had a nice visit then raced back to I-285.
Michael is a nice guy and an Aussie. This is called an "Outlaw" 356.
My new car (I went to a very expensive lunch). Well, it was cheaper than an early Mustang fastback.

I plan to drive it on the track like I stole it. What other purpose are those cars for?
Dean,
You know Gary (Larry has meet him, Tom hasn't). So, Gary finds this pristine 1997 Cobra on eBay. The owner bought it new and added several nice modifications (long tubes, camber plates, etc.). The owner manages to put 11K miles on it since it was new. The undercarriage is perfect (he spends more time polishing it than driving it).
Gary bought it. The owner says "I hope you take care of it". Gary says that he will. The deal is done. Gary plans to take it back to the shop and rip out the interior and weld in a cage. It will be a new race car.
Fair Warning: Don't sale your pride and joy car to a racer. There are two types of race cars: Those that have been wrecked and those that will be wrecked.

Uh, that makes no sense. Why buy a cherry Cobra(paying decent money for it, altho I do know Gary and he only buys a "deal") and then strip it? There are lots of "rollers" out there for next to nothing, while there aren't that many "garage queen" Cobras. Hmm, think he wants to flip it? I'm in the market for another SN95.
Dean
ps Doc, are you really going to race two cars? Tires X 2, Fuel X 2, Transport X 2, etc, etc. You find a Sponsor? What's up?

Doc,
Is this car for the vintage R class? If yes, I guess they are allowing modular motors?

Yes, the Multimatic team used the modular engine? IMO, the pushrod cars will have the advantage due to the better torque coming out of the corners. Gary is building a pushrod '94 Cobra and a modular '97 Cobra for the fall races (the #53 Zippo car will not be ready until next year; it will benefit from the testing of the other two).

Gary wants the nicest looking car that he can find. He wants a stunning car and finds it cheaper to start with a nice car. He bought them off eBay. I doubt you'd want it now since it's in a million pieces.
This 1966 Shelby just won the Muscle Car class on the streets of Carmel at this week's Monterey events. It was restored in a shop in Hephzibah, GA.
They award a sterling silver platter from Cartier.
A Boss 302 from Gary Jones' shop was also a big hit.
My old race car has been completely rebuilt by the shop. It will not be winning any silver platters. Check out this Cobra Automotive front brake ducts (that will get some air in there):
Doc,
If your motor will just stop missing you will be in great shape now that you are able to finally stop. Will you be at the Historic races the last weekend in August at Road Atlanta????

Larry,
Yea, we'll all be there. Tim is coming, and a friend of his is bringing a car that Tim sold him (it will be his first race). It's next weekend (20th-23rd).
No more excuses for me. The new engine went in last week.
DOC, why didn't you tell us you won the PowerBall?
Dean, you should know that I don't gamble. I'll swear that I have never bought a lottery ticket if my life (and never will).
However, my car had racing brakes and suspension pieces that were 12 years old. They have served me well, but I knew it was time to rebuild what I had or upgrade the stuff a bit. It's all Bruce's fault, and I have instructed Gary to send the bills to Bruce (who will send them to you ).

You better get your checkbook ready!
I don't know Doc - another race car(a Porsche no less, for the guy who has always said "I'll never buy another race car") big brakes, Cobra Auto. parts and new motor for the old coupe? Sounds like Lotto money to me!

I will level with you. It seems that Ferrari wanted that old M. Schumacher guy to drive a Ferrari. He couldn't do it so they called me.
I told them that I would do it if they paid to put new brakes on my vintage race car. That's my story, and I am sticking with it.

Tom, now you know better than that.
This group of guys are special because we can give each other grief (we call it "checking your buddy" in the south).
My good buddy (Jeff) is building a red '65 coupe. Of course, I immediately named it the doc-clone car. It was all in fun because he knows that he can kick my butt at any race track. We don't call him "Wild Man" for no reason. Check it out:
Some guys play golf, some guys play with women outside their marriage vows, and some guys play with cars. I prefer the later group.
I think you may be referring to the gold chain wearing corvette crowd?
Bruce,
You are not doing your job.
I can't believe that you missed my pictures of a Corvette rear brake on my 1965 Mustang?
Have you been too busy attending those Nancy Pelosi fund raising activities for the advancement of gay marriage, health care disaster, and further fatal deficit spending?
Not me. I've been over in the race shop.
Then, someone offered me a Porsche for half the price of a 1966 Mustang Fastback. What was I supposed to do? Ask Al Gore if this is allowable within his parameters of etiquette?
Not me. Scott and I had a few beers and decided on a proper price. I've known this guy for years. I am not a small guy, but I'd want Scott on my side in any bar fight.
