We lost a brother today. Please, please, please say a prayer for this officer and his family. From what I know he has 3 kids (7, 3, and 10 months) and his wife is pregnant. I can't imagine how she feels, the holidays, providing for the children, no father, raising these kids without an income. If you can afford to donate anything to the fund for this officers family below please do so.

Be thankful for everything you have, your family, your toys, your home and your job. We don't always get everything we want but things like this remind us to be thankful for what we do have and take for granted. Be safe out there everyone.

HACIENDA HEIGHTS (KABC) -- Slick roads are being blamed for the death of a California Highway Patrol officer early Monday morning.

Officer Joseph Sanders, 29, was hit by a car and killed as he directed traffic at the scene of a previous accident on the eastbound 60 Freeway.

The fatal crash, reported at 4:20 a.m., happened west of Azusa Avenue in Hacienda Heights.

The CHP says two vehicles collided and one of them then hit the officer, who was airlifted to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"Just like the rest of us out here, he had a family," said CHP Sgt. Mike Garrett. "The family's been notified at this time and our personnel, our managers are with the family. This is a very, very dark day for the CHP. This officer was out there trying to lend assistance to the citizens of California and unfortunately lost his life."

The officer, whose name has not been released, was assigned to the Santa Fe Springs office a year ago.

The eastbound 60 Freeway was shut down for hours at the 605 Freeway connector to Azusa for the investigation.

Sanders had been with CHP for 14 months. He left behind a wife and children.

Very sad to hear. Definetly pray for him.

Don't officers that get killed in the line of duty get any sort of pay for the families. Seems crazy if they don't.

damn so i just heard about that this morning. I was actually going on the opposite way on the 60 and noticed there CHP everywhere and they even setup one of those posts. I saw 3 cars that was hit and instantly thought someone passed for sure. Then noticed the WHOLE 60 freeway was shut down so it must of been a serious accident. Didnt hear it was an officer till right now. Damn that sucks to hear.
