I am installing a Kenne Bell 2.2 blower really soon. I guess I will have to finally upgrade the stock clutch. I wanted to go twin disc (McLeod) because I already have a new Fidanza aluminum flywheel but considering the amount of cash I have been spending lately I am trying to hold off from spending another $1000 for a clutch and 26 spline input shaft.
Would it be OK to stay 10 spline and go with a SPEC 2 for now or is that asking for trouble? I may put off any drag racing this year and just road course race only. I am guessing I can upgrade to the 26 spline and McLeod next year. I just do not like the on/off feel of the Spec3 or Spec3+. I also want softer than stock pedal effort.
I have already installed an aluminum quadrant, firewall adjuster, LDC clutch freeplay kit, and TriAX shifter (which will also have to do for now). I also already have the throw out bearing retaining sleeve and LDC cooling mod ready for install.
Thanks

I'm running the spec 2 now but no blower yet, I'd say that with street tires it should be fine. Dumping the clutch with slicks, anybody's guess if it will hold.

Thanks, I will plan to get the Spec2 and look into the Spec2+ driveability characteristics. For right now I will also plan to stay 10 spline and stay off the drag strip.
For what it's worth a friend has a spec2+ on a 97 cobra running a 150 shot tuned by anderson w the 275 m/t dr radials. He said 420 whp and 440 wtq. So far it's held and nice driveability. I'd go a 3+ spec myself, nice driveability (my wife drives it) no issues now it's broken in. She was a truck driver once though. Spec 3+ so far has held spray w the hoosiers for what that is worth. Street a 2+ ought to hold ok even w dr imo. I never broke stuff on the street, ya the stock clutch fried though. That was a 2nd to 5th misshift though on the spray. A 3+ I believe would hold that if you jacked up.

pulled 28k miles on a spec 2 on my mach. you will be just fine. IMO, i would probably save the 330 dolllars for a spec and just pick up a stock 0304 cobra clutch. its 130 cheaper, and has been decent in 500 hp cars.

Stock clutch is great but a bit to hard of a pedal. I was sick last year and became very weak and realized I couldn't drive my cobra before I went for a serious surgery. My wants at that time was quite simple - possible one last drive and I couldn't do it. I also expect to reach 550HP so the stock clutch may be at its rated limit anyhow.

Thanks for responding. I like the feel of the Centerforce Dual Friction clutch. Very smooth and much softer than stock. I did not like driving in a traffic jam with a Spec 3+. It has more of an on/off feel to it. You have to rev it higher to get going without stalling. Maybe its perfect for the drag strip launches with slicks but not comfortable and a bit to unrefined in an area where I prefer comfort.
I will chat with the tech dept and then talk to sales for their recommendation. Thanks

I've got 9 screws and a plate in my left ankle, one reason I did the spec 3+ and spec lpr p/p. Your mom could push it easy.... No brainer now for me for that reason. You would need a stock cable modded, a firewall adj. and a quick quad to do this though. Ya it's a few $.

Thanks for the info. I hear so many different reviews regarding the Spec 3+ and I have actually watched a really nice video of the install.
Honestly w 2k+ on the clutch it's plenty smooth take off but can engage hard esp doing a quick shift if you want. Which I do esp w the nitrous on, the old stocker always felt like it slipped a lil esp the 2/3 shift even on the street.
At first 1k it was jerky taking off, I thought wtf but now it's fine. Like I said wife drives it anytime needed. And my foot has a rest. I don't know of anyone else w a alum flywheel w a spec 3+ and the spec lpr p/p in a 03. Like I said you need a stock modded cable, a upr click stop firewall adj. and the quick quad. That will work fine. 30# approx. vs 50# stock. I don't jack w it either fwiw. I hate jacking w stuff all the time. The spec 2+ seems ok also just don't know if it would hold spray w tires on. He said his was smooth pretty quick fwiw w stock 97 flywheel.
spec 2 isn't strong enough..i run a spec billet fly and a fidanza 4.3 and it hold anything i throw at it with my KB and has for 4K miles with NO trouble.. also..fastlanecobra??? fastlane motorsports built?
^ He's talking a 2+ a whole different ballgame than a spec 2. 97 cobra guy I know bought a 2+ at a event, one of the first they were selling. I can say it has held his 97 w spray and m/t 275 dr fine. Like myself I got a 3+ not a 3 cause of way it was made and optioned the lpr p/p. They called me to make sure I had at least a firewall adj. and a quad. As far as spec mod 11" fords go I'd rate the 2+ and or 3+ over a 2 or a 3.

Not Fastlane Motorsports built....Fastlane as in the "left lane or passing lane" on the autobahn here in Germany.
Thats the lane that I merge onto and exit from
I have the stock clutch in my whippled 04. 17lbs of boost. 6,200 miles. It holds just fine. My tuner said they are good to about 550RWHP. But they will not take constant launches and big burnouts from cars making those numbers. They will hold power running through gears on the street and light track duty.
spec 2+ here and it holds just fine with 684 RWHP whippled car full weight on slicks. once you break her in a little she refines on the street nicely. in my opinion, if your car is a street car and you like to actually drive it rather then straight down a drag strip, then 2+ is a nice clutch. I've driven them with 3+....a little too radical for street fun. in my opinion, if your not over 650+, I wouldn't mess with the 3+

Thanks Phil, I know your car very well and I only got to see you run on the stock clutch with slicks. Are you back in the states now? (eurocobra)
