Since it seems we have had a rash of questions regarding the differences between the 93 Cobra and a regular 5.0, I decided to pull an old post of mine up and restate the differences. I'll send a PM to a Mod and get this puppy stickied as well, so new visitors can see it too. Saw that the other year model Cobra boards have a similar sticky, so thought "why not us as well"?
If anyone sees anything that needs corrected, let me know.
Absolutely no 93 Cobra convertables made.
There were 4993 Cobras and 107 Cobra R's produced in 1993 for a total of 5100.
1FACP42D... is how the VIN should read. No Cobra came with cruise control. Only 5 options were available - PWR drivers seat, leather, CD, Rear window defrost, and Sunroof. Engine block heater, CA emissions, High Altitude principle use, and million mile odometer were also available, but don't show up on the door tag, buck tag, or VIN.
• Unique 17x7.5 turbine style wheels (unique offset - 93 Cobra is 3/4" wider per side with unique front rotors with taller hats)
• Opened up grill area with running horse insert
• Unique rear bumper, side skirts and grill opening
• Rear disc brakes
• Snake emblems on fenders should be non-directional (DS faces to the back, passenger side faces to the front, unique to 93 Cobras)
• LX style tailpipes
• SVO style tail lights
• Unique rear spoiler
• GT40 Iron heads (3 "bars" should be visible on front of head, "GT" cast into head under valve cover
• Black stamped steel valve covers (94-95 Cobra valve covers have "Cobra" embossed into them).
• Crane 1.7 roller rockers, cast aluminum
• Available in 3 colors only: Teal metallic, Vibrant Red (kinda orange red), Black
• 70mm MAF
• 65mm throttle body
• Cobra (cast GT40) upper and lower intake
• Unique mufflers and tailpipes (extended hangers on LX style tailpipes)
• Smaller front sway bar - 28.5mm as compared to the larger 33mm unit used on the GT, the rear bar measured 21mm
• 4 cylinder rear springs and regular 5.0 front springs. The front springs were 425/530 lbs./in progressive rate, while the rear springs had a linear rating of 160 lb./in versus a progressive 200/300 lb./in. rate used on the GT.
• Unique struts and shocks (Tokico was the OEM supplier)
• Unique cam (Used in 93 t birds and cougars, 94-95 Australian falcons)
• Unique EEC (X3Z catch code)
• 24# injectors
• 1" bore master cylinder
• Larger brake booster
• Unique tranny (World Class T5) - phosphate coated 2nd and 3rd gears, steel pocket bearing retainer
• Stock 5.0 fuel pump
• Hardened driveshaft yoke
• Unique brake proportioning valve
• Non cruise leather wrapped steering wheel
• Lettered floormats
• Unique crank and water pump pulleys (underdriven crank, overdriven WP)
• 3:08 ring and pinion
• Higher-rate bushings at the forward end of the rear upper control arms
Exterior Colors: Teal Clearcoat, Vibrant Red Clearcoat, Black Clearcoat
Interior Colors: Black Cloth, Grey Cloth, Grey Leather
The biggest and easiest indicator is the VIN number. If you are looking at a convertible, then it is definitely not a Cobra.

Yep. New York required the million mile odometer. You can check the DSO for your car, and I bet it is for New York. Unless CT required the MM odometer (pretty sure it didn't but you never know).

Only drivers holding a license from a sanctioned racing body could purchase an R - Cobras were sold to any Tom, Dick or Harry
Due to the R's rear suspension, it came with a warning, "Due to the wider tires for use on smooth race tracks, you may experience some bottoming out of rear fenders on the tires. It is advisable to avoid bumps and to enter driveway ramps at an extreme angle to minimize tire-to-fender contact."
107 R's were built - 4,993 Cobras were built
R's sold for $25,692 - Cobras base price was $21,578
Also, the information I have lists the 3.08 gears as standard equipment for both the Cobra and GT.
Everything I've seen says the 2.73 was standard, and 3.08 was optional on 93 model 5spd 5.0's, and 3.27 was standard on automatics. BTW, the 3.08 was a no charge option on regular 5.0's.
The million mile Odometer, was only NY DSO cars. CT didn't get them. Apparently this was required in combination with a rear window defroster. I've seen a few other 93 NY DSO Cobra's and each had this option combo. You guys with this odometer, do your cars also have the defroster option?

The ultimate source for accurate SVT Cobra information is in the "SVT Cobra Recognition Guide" written by the late Tom Shriener. He was working on the revision to the book when he passed away on 7/9/05. Not sure if you can still get a copy of the original book, but the folks at www.t5design.com would know.

Yeah, I've been waiting on the revision of it, but haven't heard anything lately. Mark Wilson said it was still in progress a while back, but I'm unsure if that was before or after Mr. Shriener passed.
Did not know the MM odometer option also included the RW defrost, that's interesting.

My 92GT was an automatic and had 3.27 stock gears in it
How detailed do you want to get with this? You didn't mention that there are two different intakes on the production cars. The first 500 or so received one intake and the rest received the intake that is commonly available. The Vacuum tree is unique. The rear facia supports are unique.
The Million mile speedo was a NY option but any state bordering NY could have received it as a NC option. This is commonly done so that customers from that state could still purchase vehicles out of state that would meet the state requirements. It also makes it easier for the dealers to dealer trade new cars. Same thing with California emissions. NY also required the rear defrost but I'm not sure if it was tied directly to the million mile speedo.
I'd probably mention that the new repro wheels don't have the same offset as the original Cobra wheels.
you could mention that the injectors are blue (although I have seen some Cobras with high altitude emissions that came with brown injectors)
In addition to the front rotor being unique and you might also want to mention that they are 4 lug as I've had many people tell me all 93 Cobra's are 5 lug (just the Cobra R's were 5 lug).
The decklid is also technically unique as the holes for the rear spoiler are stamped out for the middle stantions on the spoiler. I haven't checked to see if the decklid has a unique part number (which it should).
The clutch was unique.
Serpentine belt was unique (if someone has a motorcraft part number handy it might not be a bad idea to add)
The rear parking brake cables are unique.
The tire isn't mentioned - 245/45ZR17 Gatorbacks
Wheel centercaps are stamped out of brush stainless steel
I'd also mention that the dash gauges were NOT white and that there was no SVT badge on the rear decklid but there is a unique 93 only "COBRA" badge.
Lastly (I think), I'd probably break it up into categories (Interior, Exterior, Chassis, Engine, Drivetrain, Body, Electrical) just so that people know where to find things as there is a lot of information.
I know I'm sounding like a broken record but the Recognition Guide is still being worked on. There are some legal issues being resolved which are delaying the release of the book. Hang in there as the final result will DEFINITELY be worth the wait!
Great info!

Does everyones cobra have a signature on the passenger side front bumper near the fog lamp? I know that mine does as well as my friends Teal 93? Looks like a guy named Chuck signed it so maybe he was the painter or he was bored on a friday at the plant?
Thanks for chiming in, Mark. Wondering when you would. Can't wait to see the recognition guide! I'll go back and edit my post, busting it up as you suggested. I made that post on the corral a while back, and basically just worked from my memory.
jhein - it wasn't normal for them to be signed, in fact your's is the first I have heard of.
2.73's were standard on the all 5.0's except Cobra (Which we know got the 3.08). 3.08's were optional with the 5 speed and 3.27's were optional on the Automatics.
Just as an aside....you could get 3.73's with the 4 cylinder auto!
