Suggestions on what tire/brand/model to go with...

I have decided to go with the 275/40/17's on the rear (stock rims). My cobra is mildly modded and I drive mainly on the street, with some track time as well(i drive maybe 500 miles/yr). I was wondering what tires would be best for my application....

1. Nitto 555 Extreme
2. Nitto 555R Drag Radial
3. BFGoodrich DR2
4. BFGoodrich KDW

I was leaning towards the 555R's because they run a little more narrow than the BFGoodrich tires and might last a little longer.... Thoughts????

The best bang for the buck of what you listed is the 555extreems.

Good feel, good cornering, decent grip and will last a long time.

I used them on the street, road course and drag strip with decent results on all.

Had many track days on the road course, 1.82 60' at the strip and got ~20-25K miles out of them.

The BFG's will not yeild any milage whatsover. Managed about 800 miles with the last set I had, but my power level has a bit to do with that also......lol! I actually run the KDW's up front and they wear like any other performance tire.

The Nitto's will get decent milage, and perform better than you average street tire. If you looking for something that will work a little better at the drag strip, I'd give them a shot.

Most performance tires like the KDW's aren't meant for drag racing. They are generally desinged for wet and dry condtions, high speed, and OEM tire pressure.

Then again, it sounds as if you'll dry-rot whatever tire you go with long before you reach it's expected mileage limits. I'm in the same boat with my fronts. I've only got about 2000 miles on them but they're 3 years old.

For primarily street use 555 extremes work relly well. However, 275's look goofy on the stock rims (hang over to far). My drag tires (555R's) are on stock wheels. For my street/autocross tires I have some Kumho MX's on 9.25" wide stock widend wheels. Both tires are 275's. The wider wheels look much better.

Nitto 555r. The side walls do roll in quite a bit on the stock wheels, but they hook pretty well I have been 11.9's on them with a 275/40/17
