Huge project!!!!! Need opinions...

Ladies and Gentlemen, here is a short summary of what i'm doing and looking for help with : Swapping a 3.8L v6 w/ an 04 mach 1 4.6 and putting on an air to air intercooled vortech supercharger. I'm looking for insight on the install, suggestions or comments, tips or pointers / really anything in general. And yes, I know the swap has been covered.

Here is the longwinded version : I'm a United States Marine in California, and as much as I love my job, I love my car just as much. I picked the car up for 2k in 2007 and have been transforming it into something else entirely. I bought a 4.6L DOHC 32v v8 from a donor car a few years ago along w/ the ecu, wiring harness, 3650 trans, d.s., and 8.8 rear w/ 3.55s. I planned on putting it in immediately, but I've been to Iraq twice (2005-06 and 08-09) and Afghanistan twice (2009-10 and 11-12) I had 07 off from the war on terrorism. so that has put a kink in my timeline obviously. I just got back about a month ago, and have been piecing together the other things i needed for my swap... radiator, fan and shroud, ccrm, UPR off-road x, hydraboost, etc... Then i said to hell w/ it.. If the engine is out, I might as well go big or go home, so I bought a vortech v2 T-trim w/ air to air intercooler and blow through maf from the forums here. And of course that led to me needing more things... Just picked up dual focus pumps, K.B. bap, and forged manley I beams and pistons (18cc dish for 8.5:1 compression). I'm still looking for a dual fpdm set up and 60lb injectors. I'm doing the swap w/ two other Marines and they were professional mechanics prior to the Corps. I'm handy myself, so the entire swap will be done on base by us and then trailered to a tune shop for the electrical hookups, pats and tuning. I'm very familiar w/ what is required for the engine swap, but the only thing i can find on an intercooler / vortech install is for the aftercooled model and I have no pictures as reference. So if you have some useful places i could find solid information on any or all of the things involved in the swap (spec. the k.b. bap install, vortech and i.c. install) it would be a HUGE help. I'm shooting for 425 to the wheels, maybe a little more on a safe tune. I know its impossible to tell, but does that seem reasonable? If you have any suggestions whatsoever, things you think I should pick up, parts that worked well for you or solid install info please let me know. I appreciate you taking the time to read this huge novel.

This will be the final setup : 2004 mach 1 4.6L 32v V8 w/ forged internals (8.5:1 C.R.), Vortech v2 T-trim air to air intercooled supercharger, stock 3650 trans, d.s and 8.8" rear w/ 3.55s, dual focus pumps w/ K.B. bap, 60lb injectors and dual fpdm. Thanks again for the help.

if you are going to spend the money to do forged internals i would skip the t trim and 3650 transmission

425 is easily reachable with the mach 1 motor and a vortech, the forged internals are actually overkill IMO for 425hp. obviously better safe than sorry, and the motor is out so now's better time than ever. but if you never plan on higher HP, i'd skip the forged internals and get a T-56 instead of the T-3650. i know this will add to your install, and this is just my opinion and im by no means a professional. but throw that 6spd in there and 4.10's in the rear and that 425hp will feel like quite a bit more.

ps. who are you with in the corps?

8.5:1 is too low for a centri blower. My opinion is go 9.5:1; you'll retain some of that lower-rpm grunt. 4.10's will also help with the low-end. You are ok with the 3650, but upgrade to a 26-spline input shaft with a mild clutch (stock Cobra clutch would do just fine).

Thank you for such an extensive deployment. Your service is greatly appreciated.

First off thank you for your service! Excuse if I have missed it, but have you already purchased a K member? I find easier to install from under the the car...

As stated I would bump the compression up into the 9s as well with the centri. You could easily achieve the power your seeking to make and past that with the forged internals. You don't need to upgrade to a t56 at this power level either. I have my stock Mach tr3650 and am making plenty of power with a stage 3 spec clutch. There was a KB Bap how-to install somewhere on this site, ill try and track it down. If I remember correctly it was in the Terminator how-to section.

The other thing you might want to consider is upgrading your front brakes to cobras or the Machs which are the same 13inch rotor and 4 piston setup. You also may need a lightning MAF with a MAFia in addition to boost the CFM control. Also the vortex website may have an instal guide for your exact kit but if not, Mach 1 registry would most likely have it as well. I also agree with trying to upgrade to the air to water intercooler, but again I think that option is for the larger trim kits. And Id also suggest some cooling upgrades such as upgrading the thermostat, running an open one, and if you can use the Even Cool Head Flow cooling kit (not sure it will work on centri setups).

Thanks for the outstanding service as well, I actually submitted my application for OCS yesterday. Where are you at? Camp Pendleton or 29 Palms?

yeah, i really should do the front brake upgrade, but its sooo darn expensive. i'm trying not to tap into my savings for the build and do it by paychecks. I have a 90mm blowthrough maf w/ the vortech kit. As far as the air to water i.c., it looks pretty complex for the install and I put a lot of miles on my car and I worry about the heat soak. and yeah, the thermostat is on the to do list. Application for OCS? Nice. Best of luck. Are you currently enlisted? I'm at camp pendleton and have been for the last 7 years. I have orders to Drill Instructor school @ recruit depot San Diego in april. @04 mach 1 blur.. WOW, thanks man, great links. That is exactly the type of stuff I was looking for. Thank you.

SgtBoylan, adequate brakes are a must. You may not think so, but a car is just as much of a weapon as your firearm, sir. In event you need to make a sudden stop, you will happy that you upgraded them...

I agree 100%, I just need to find a good kit. I'm only seeing them in the $1500 range, if I find a reasonable set I will definitely pick them up. First name is Dylan by the way. Sorry.

Also, I'm looking into getting a wideband o2 kit and an a/f gauge. What do you guys think? Anybody have one already? What kits are good(not $400 lol) in your experience?
