Wow, I just had a great idea. Since I didn't buy photomatix, I wanted a way to get the image without the photomatix water mark on it.... since I was in CS3 already, it was easy.
image ---> mode---> 16 or 32 bit.
filter-----> photomatix ---> tone mapping (do all of your tone mapping to get the image your looking for)
select "large" preview size, take a screen shot (diretions below if you've never done it)
to take a screen shot:
Print screen ---> ctrl + C ----> file --> new (whatever dimension your desktop resolution is set at) ---> ctrl + v
crop appropriately, and boom, you have yourself a free version of photomatix
check it out, not bad huh?
