Color, unless your going to be spending alot of time on bodywork.. something bright like red/yellow/blue etc. DHG would be my choise but just like black, all imperfections will stand out like a sore thumb.

I bought the car w/ 14" cragar ss wheels. They're history. I have eye on torque thrust wheels that are 17x9 w/ 6.5 backspacing. These rims are currently on cooper 285/40zr17 tires. Is there any reason these wheels would not fit the stock hubs? The front has disc brakes but the caliper is standard size.
I remember the aftermarket front disc conversions (put out by Stainless Steel Brakes) you needed to run a 15" wheel to clear the caliper.
Will a 17x9 fit in the rear? I'd worry a little about the relatively narrow rear fenderwells of the 67-68s. But your 6.5" back spacing should clear it.
That project has tons of potential! I have a '70 myself, and my dad has a '69 Mach I 428 CJ. So I am pretty familiar with the classics. Here are some links that will be of some use to you as you work on your project. If you are interested I can hook you up with more links for just about anything for classic Mustangs. Good luck with your project!
Stangnet has the best classic tech forum I have found yet. The guys there can answer virtually any question you might have. Classic Tech - Mustang Forums at StangNet
This is a link to a guy that has put together a very comprehensive chart of wheel combinations for classic mustangs. Dodgestang Archives
Finally here is a link to a site that has lots of good info about Ford 9 inch rear ends. Ultrastang - Steve Ainsworth
Why even touch the body? It looks fine. Drop in an awesome drivetrain, a nice suspension, some brakes/wheels, and ENJOY the car. You will be able to drive it anywhere, at any time, and park it anywhere.

Thank you very much for these links, the wheel combo chart is amazing! Did you put that together? I think I'm going with 8" up front and 9 -9.5" out back.

Appreciate the suggestion but you're actually serious ?

Yeah! I respect a car a LOT more seeing it driven, instead of sitting at a car show 4 times a year. I don't know if we're looking at the same pics, but the body looks fine. I woudl simply get it driveable, and ENJOY it.
How about a worked 390...go old school
And it should be DHG with a top loader 4 speed, hands down.
I'm having my engine (347 Stroker) built by one of the top Mustang builders in the country so I'm confident the engine will meet my expectations not to mention a blower may be in the works! Also, as far as Highland Green goes, I know the history of the car which I respect, but personally there isn't a more UNINSPIRING color I could paint it. This car will likely be Blue, Black or Silver in color.

Kevin don't worry this will be no garage queen. This car will be driven and enjoyed! Don't make enough money to just polish my cars and bragg about the specs, I drive them and drive them hard!
its been a while since i talked to him about it but theres a built 306 and im not sure which trans he went with. the cars a garage queen though its kinda a shame.

No, I can't take any credit for the wheel chart. But it has been very usefull in the past. Have you decided on a suspension yet? I only ask because I have been researching this quite a bit over the last few years and have found some great sources.
Questions - what are the widest wheels I can run on the back of my '68? What is the offset? Good place to buy Torque Thrust 2 wheels?
I'm not for sure, but I think 17x9 is the widest, call Year One or somebody like that and check and see. Best place to buy torq thrust is Ebay for like $840 includes everything you need.
