So here's the situation. I've got some rewards points from American Express that I'm thinking of cashing in and I could really use a nice TV for the den. I looked through some of the TVs that they offer and this one seems like it would go well in the den (not too big - 42" is about right for the space)
Does this look like a good one to buy? I know it is not true HD (720p) but I'm not out to set up a home theater with this one.
Panasonic TH-42PX77U Plasma TV
42-inch Viera Plasma HDTV
Here is the link to AMX, with some of the other TVs. I've got about 260,000 points, so that's my limit. The 42" will probably be the best fit as well. If you all see anything that looks better, let me know what you all think.

That is the exact model I have. I don't need a cable box for HD i get all my local channels in HD without paying the cable company to give me something I should already be able to get over the air. The HD picture is very good. DVD is good. Regular tv is ok but not as good as your typical 4:3. There have been no instances of "burn in" and I think typical plasma life is 70000-80000 hours. You'd have to watch a ton of tv for your plasma to take an early exit. Also if you put it in a room that is well lit I think you'll appreciate the anti-glare coating.
I think once/if you get it you won't be disapointed.

I researched the hell out of all tv on the market last year. Ended up getting the 42" panasonic plasma.
Dont be misinformed by some just spurting off comments about the life span. By the time the plasma is ready to die off , you'll have already bought another tv.
Plasma has the advantage of no fall off , meaning that from any angle the picture is still clear and not fading off like a LCD or others.
As for quality , the absolute best and highest ranked tvs by customers and techs , are Pioneer being the top of the line , followed by Panasonic.
The reason I opted for the panasonic was soley based on cost. You pay a little more for pioneer.
I purchased mine from Costco for $ 1299 after a $200 instant rebate. When I see what some are paying for smaller or equal sized LCD's , there is no comparison.

you need to do some more research...or have your eyes checked.
I work in an electronics store and have for the past 5 years. I remember when a 42'' plasma cost 5k. I personally have a 42'' panasonic plasma 720p and it looks fantastic. Plus it cost me $750.
Just remember your "source" is just as important as your TV choice. HD DVD or a Blu-Ray player you're getting "true" HD. For all you cable guys, keep in mind the MINUTE the signal goes through the analog cables that were laid down 20 years ago you're NOT getting HD. It may look great, but it's NOT HD. Satellite guys, your shit is compressed beyond belief. OTA/FIOS is the ONLY way to see "true HD" in America. In addition to the HD DVD and Blu Ray sources that is. Time to wake up.

If you can check out Pioneer. My parents picked up a 50" plasma Pioneer and it is one of the best pictures out there. I used my PS3 to watch 300 on it in Blu Ray and it was the best looking picture I've ever seen.

i have the phillips that was linked to in your original post and i freakin LOVE it!!!!!! people always look at me wierd when i say this, but once you watch something on a tv with the ambilight.....it will never look the same on any other tv again!! i know it seems like its just a set of "stupid lights that show on the wall, but seriously i think it makes it so much better. so........+9999999999999999999 on the phillips
Plasmas have a life span of about 25 years if kept up, so dont mind the people spouting meaningless comments about LCDs. Also, They do require a bit of power, but its not like your energy bill is going to sky rocket. Gimme a break, if it was that bad, they wouldnt exist.
Edit: I've owned a pioneer(1080i)42'' and panasonic(1080p)50'', the pioneer is, in fact, better.

If you can afford a plasma, go for it. I've had my 42" Toshiba plasma for 3 years. Not one single problem. Lots of nay-sayers out there that knock plasma simply because they can't afford them.
I recomend dlp , I got a samsung 1080p 61 incher, kicks ass, and the guy at the store also recomended not to get plasma, cause the pixels, or whatever they are called are not replacable, unless you replace them all at same time, mucho $$$ for that. I love my tv, Good luck with your choice

Still on a 32" regular flat screen here. Great picture! I see absolutely no reason to waste all that extra money when I have a TV that works just fine. As long as I can see it, I'm happy.

My parents have the 600U model which is last years Panasonic plasma, I have done a ton of research for them and Plasma is the way to go. For many questions here is a good site that has explanation and comparisons. For all the people talking about the life and possibility of burn in need to replace their brain pixels. The website also has optimal settings for most of the TVs they review. http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/

Yea, my power bill went from $200 to $200,000!!!!! Everytime I turn on my Plasma I think of the scene from Christmas Vacation when Clark plugs in his outdoor Christmas lights, and the backup power supply at the plant needs to be turned on. During a month with a HD tv you may use an extra 1-2Kwh a month? Thats not anywhere near a power hog. I will say though, a larger plasma/lcd do give off a not so nice heat source though.
