Oh, that was a good one. I haven't read it since HS, but I think I will again.

Another good one is 'Hiroshima' by John Hersey.

Yep, and just about anything else by Stephen King, including his non-fiction memoirs/guide to writing, "On Writing."

Check out The Black Company series by Glen Cook.

It's fantasy, but goddamn does it feel real. He really makes the characters believable and shatters the boring archtypes.

One of the comments describes the novels thus: "It's like reading Vietnam war fiction on peyote."

I agree, it'll forge a nice little protective layer to the global warming nonsense they'll hear in college. It's also a page turner. I like Crichton because you can finish a book in several hours. I'm a little less focused when it comes to non-fiction.

"Chasing Moonlight" by Friedlander and Reising

"1984" and "Animal Farm" by Orwell

"The Gulag Archipelago" by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

"It", "The Stand", or anything else by Stephen King

+1 (or was it 2?) on "Deception Point" by Brown

"Airframe" and "The Andromeda Strain" by Michael Crichton

Sorry, lots of fiction but some of my favorites.

anything by stephen king or dean koontz. i will typically read a couple koontz books and then a king book in between. "intensity" is a terrifying book my koontz

one of the first replies was "american psycho"--by bret easton ellis. he also wrote two other books that became movies "the rules of attraction" and "less than zero". he has a couple other books that are pretty good as well. if you like the movie american psycho, then the book is a must. it is downright disturbing--you will find yourself looking over your shoulder to make sure people are not observing you read the book--it will leave you feeling dirty at times

CannonBall! by Brock Yates. non-fiction on the Cannonball sea-to-shining sea dash of the 70's. Yate's story, as well as a bunch of other racers.

Out of the Ashes by William Johnston. post-apocalyptic fictional novel. starts in '88 when the world finally snaps and all the nukes are launched. first of a series.

"The Killing Zone: My life in the Vietnam War" Amazing book, also might like "House to House: A soldiers memoir"

I love memoir books and these two are in my top runnings.

Oh and if you like "Go Like Hell" check out "Racing in the Rain" pretty good book similar to the same lines.

"STIFF: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers" You wouldn't believe some of the shit they do/did to cadavers, and you might come away with a different perspective on death.
