I want to put one in my garage this summer and wondering the pros and cons of either the 4 post or 2 post lifts.Seems like the 4 posts are most popular for home use. What should a person look for when purchasing a lift?

Depends what your looking for the 4 poster isnt as nice for doing wheel work then you have to get the slider lift in addition to to lift it by the lower arms.

If you buy the 2 poster you have to watch out for how low the lift arms pad go. BIG differance you dont want to fight getting the car up on the pads I have rotten time getting my Saleen on. Usually takes me longer to get the Saleen on the 2 post lift that the work being done. Forward has a nice low lift pad.

Just because they say they are low pads doesnt mean they are. I seen some claiming they are but they were 4" Look at every brand and and check the spec for the lift pad. Withe ceiling you will have to do your homework also. Also you want off center ones otherwise its hard opening your door.

Some people park cars underneath the 4post and are movable. Also I have seen portable/movable 2 post lifts now (only when car is off obviously).

I have a 4 post drive on, and love it. It is perfect for 99% of anything you would want a lift for, with the exception that it takes a bit more effort to remove wheels, or do brake work, since you need to independently jack the car to remove wheels. This really isn't a big deal as most come with a sliding bridge, so you can just stick a couple of low profile bottle jacks in when you want to jack those points. Eventually I will by the rolling jack that takes the place of the bridge, though, because it is much easier to setup when you have a lowered car like mine. I also love the fact that since it doesn't need to be bolted down, it is very easy to take with me, when/if I move, and that feature makes it very stable and safe as well. Since I park on it, the car is always ready to go, if I need to check something underneath, polish the wheels, or anything else that you would want to access without bending down. Possibly the single best tool investment that I ever made.;-)

My tax money will be going for an American made midrise scissor lift. Portable too. Not sure if this will clear some of the lowered cars; it has a 5.5" min height. I'd put some boards down to run up on if I have to. When not using it. my truck will park over the top of it. Check out this place:

I am going to try to get a lift this summer. 2 post FTW IMO. I wouldn't go any other way. Makes everything easier.
