Vocational School Paint Job

Don't flame me here, but I heard that vocational schools will paint your car for free basically (you pay for paint, clear).

It sounds great, but at the same time, if they suck, your paint job will suck too.

Anyone know anyone who has done this or have some pictures/examples of the work?

I was debating giving them my beater as a test vehicle to see if I like the results or not.

Thanks in advance, and keep the flaming to a minimal

My buddy painted my 300zx when he was in vocational school. All I had to buy was paint. All of the prep materials was provided by the school. My paint job turned out great. It doesn't hurt that it was a friend painting it. It was done 12 years ago, so I don't have any pics of it.

Its all in the skills of the students and the teachers. Some teachers will make sure its done right. Some teachers could care less. I know, I just got out of school for Collision/Refinishing. If you know anyone at the school who is at least a little capable of trying hard.. I say go for it. If not just hope for the best!

i turned out some badass cars while i was at school. i had the time to spend on them without worrying about makin time on a paint job or any of that bs. my body work turned out great and my paint jobs turned out like glass. although i have heard nothing but bad things from shop owners that have hired kids from UTI and stuff. but hey you never know.

BTW i painted all the 03 stuff on my car.

Every person but 1 we have ever hired from UTI have been total garbage in terms of ability, performance and attitude. They are gone within a months time. Most of the time they come in cocky, arrogant and think they no more then guys that have been doing this for 20+ years. Not saying that everyone who comes out of there is like that. I sure there are good guys that do come out of there program. However from what I personally have experienced and from other people I know in the business, they don't have the best reputation.

Funny you mention that, I went to Collision Repair during my senior year of high school, and I worked for Maaco right out of graduating. And you're 100% right.

I'll see if I can stop by one of these days and see if what they're up to now and take a few pictures, the school that is, Maaco went out of business lol.

I went to voc school for autobody and they charged the customers just the same way a real bodyshop would, paint/materials and time. The quality on most projects turned out ok, id say a little better than maacco but a little less than what you would get from a professional collision center. It really depends on what kind of instructors / students they have and their attitude and willingness to try. Ill just say i didnt get very far in my autobody career and alot of the guys i went to school with didnt either. I know some guys that just started out a bodyshops as "bitch boy" who are now kick ass bodymen.

I say to let them paint your beater as a "try out" and then go from there.

i went to a tech school for collision and the customer only payed for supplies, on the other hand my shop teacher didn't let the kids that had no idea or interest of what was goin on paint cusomer vehicles and he was always there watching everything when we did paint customer cars..... so over all it could be a good thing or a bad thing and someone said to have them paint a beater first they will look at the beater exactly like its called a beater they will not put the time or effort into that as they would something that is badazz if you know wut i mean ......... so theres some advise
