That's what I was thinking, how much power would focused energy need in order to be that strong. Plus it doesn't give it's range, life span etc.

It's do-able. I don't know that 1 watt would hurt anyone or burn anything. We have 40-watt lasers that are used in surgery, they are not very big at all, though still cart mounted. Those hurt if you get in the beam.

Like the others said, it depends on the power supply and the efficiency of the laser in converting power.

I don't think a pair of AA's will get it done. And from the picture it doesn't look like it can hold anything too big.

For some dumb reason I LOL'd at this. They give scouts a badge now for playing video games.WTF? I would love to have a laser like this. My neighbors dog pisses me off. Not to mention the next time someone cuts you off in traffic you can silently flatten their tire without them knowing.
I dont know if anyone else caught the show on History channel about lazers. I think it was one of the "Is it real" shows or something like that. They said the days of Star Wars laser guns will be reality before you know it. The military already has lasers that can shoot down and destroy a incoming missle in like 2 or 3 seconds. They also have a bigass one mounted on the front of a jet that can destroy things up to 6 miles away . Thats scary

The concept of focused energy is not new, but it's a matter of power and technology. We certainly have the technology, it's the power I think we lack.

The laser mounted inside the plane is HUGE. It takes up the whole bay of a C130. Yes, that laser can do massive damage, but it's FAR from hand held.

If you read the article it say the Laser came out of a Casio Projector or something like that.

    Hey Jim,

In Terminator, during the gun store scene, Arnold requests "a phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range". Would this actually be weaponry grade at 40 watts in pulsed bursts?

How would the effect of plasma differ from laser if this was real?

40watts can be lethal, if it is delivered in a short period of time, like a few nanoseconds. Almost any level of power can be lethal if it is delivered in a short enough period of time

Plasma differs from lasers in that is reacts with everything. a plasma is an ionized gas, and those ions are looking to meet up with other particles as fast as they can. A plasma weapon would have a much shorter range because it is reacting with the atmosphere the whole way. Also if you don't have some means of collimating it along the entire length of its travel, it just disperses.

Lasers are good over the effective range of collimation. In other words, a laser beam is not a "beam" forever, it is eventually scattered. But it has a far greater range than a plasma weapon would. The inverse square law does not apply to collimated beams; if your laser pulse leaves with 100watts, and travels several miles without being too scattered, it arrives with nearly 100watts.

As far as effect goes, each would cause burns. Lasers would burn a hole, superheating any water in the tissues in the immediate area. Plasma would be more like a shotgun, with a wider-ranging, shallower burn that would also superheat the water in the surrounding tissues.

You can buy them from their website: Red, Blue, Green Laser Pointer and Torch Flashlight - Wicked Lasers I have a green 50mw from them. Awesome laser; it has held up great. Very easy to adjust to use as a tactical sight.

If I $200 to spend on one, I would buy it. Mine was shipped from China to avoid problems with local pd
