For a different perspective, and an insight to Japanese preparedness, take a look at this:

    Good read.

The main island is actually the size of CA (if you mirrored CA it would fit almost perfectly up against the main island). People think the entire island is destroyed. Its not. Thats a big piece of real-estate. It would be like the big one hitting San Francisco and reporters asking Los Angelinos how they were affected, they wouldnt be.

Love hearing how prepared they are for the big one like that, and knowing how unprepared we are.

This is just horrible. My prayers go out to those that are affected by this tragedy. Just look at this video. It's like something out of a disaster movie. Those people driving in the background don't even know what's about to hit them. Just terrible.

Interesting - and sobering - observation:

The landscape of parts of Japan looks like the aftermath of World War Two; no industrialised country since then has suffered such a death toll. The one tiny, tiny consolation is the extent to which it shows how humanity can rally round in times of adversity, with heroic British rescue teams joining colleagues from the US and elsewhere to fly out.

And solidarity seems especially strong in Japan itself. Perhaps even more impressive than Japan’s technological power is its social strength, with supermarkets cutting prices and vending machine owners giving out free drinks as people work together to survive. Most noticeably of all, there has been no looting, and I’m not the only one curious about this.

This is quite unusual among human cultures, and it’s unlikely it would be the case in Britain. During the 2007 floods in the West Country abandoned cars were broken into and free packs of bottled water were stolen. There was looting in Chile after the earthquake last year – so much so that troops were sent in; in New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina saw looting on a shocking scale.

Why do some cultures react to disaster by reverting to everyone for himself, but others – especially the Japanese – display altruism even in adversity?

I was in the 1989 loma prieta earthquake in California - 7.0 in size. It was amusing for thirty seconds. I was about sixty miles from Oakland / San Fran when it hit, and I saw waves in the pavement like it was an ocean. The crappy part was the next three days - no power, no phone. This was 1989, before computers, but three days with no power.... Means no food. Everything in your fridge goes bad, and you can't go out and buy more food - no power means no stores open. So we basically did nothing for three days.

I was lucky; I worked in a restaurant and we had lots of canned foods. Getting to the restaurant was pain with all of the lines down, but once there we had access to everything we needed to get by.

I've wondered the same thing. Japanese culture relies heavily and historically on honor. Its highly considered a disgrace to steal and loot such as Katrina and the UK floods and earthquakes/mudslides in Brazil. We can also attribute social alienation and class gaps which are not nearly as large in Japan as in other "cultured countries". I wish more people would adopt this philosophy. On the same token, here in the states I highly doubt many businesses would give out the multitude of free services thats being seen in Japan.

Crazy! I just read that the Eastern coastline has extended 20 feet further out into see from the plate shift.

Just finally got a hold of my good friend who lives in Japan just north of Toyko. He and some friends are trying to reach the coast to help with the rescue relife groups. From what he described the entire region is destroyed. The water has literally demolished everything in its path. Surprising though he said that the Japanese who lived in the area are trying to keep their spirits up. Even with their city in ruins and everything they owned destroyed they still are incredibly courteous and polite and are doing their best to stay calm. Great to see the world coming together in such horrid times.

I come from working at a PWR, which it is referred to a containment building. In the BWR, containment itself is more focused around the reactor, dry well, wet well, etc. No matter, still refer to the entire structure as the containment structure and / or building. Media is referring to the structure as a reactor house.

I work at a PWR and containment building is referred to as the concrete structure which houses the reactor, RCS and some of it's auxiliary systems. To me when someone says that the containment blew up it means that the reactor vessel is now exposed, just wanted to clear thus up because it seems like our great media is taking this situation and blowing it up for ratings purpose.

Interesting reading that article then watching that clip. I don't think there is anyway to be prepared when mother nature deals a blow like that.
