I've used the search function and found tons of information on this... probably too much. I've read run Mercon V, Dexron III, ATF fluid, etc etc.
I just want to know if Penzoil Syncromesh will be safe to run in the stock Borg Warner T-45. I like the price much better than the GM Syncromesh and hear it's similar. I hope this cures my occasional 5th gear grind. Thank you in advance!
+1 i used rp max atf and had problems shifting drained it and put regular cheap dex/merc and so much better

Oh sorry, on topic, the best way for me to shift into fifth for me is to put in the clutch, and wait a second.. then move the shifter straight over and directly up applying slight pressure until it glides in. At first when I got the car I had some bad grinding going into fifth (as in it wouldnt even go it, it'd just bounce off) but a good technique works.. when you can't afford to do a rebuild just yet lol.

I would never ruin it like that....geez whats with you people
I can't really say much advice on the grinding but since you shouldn't be doing any hard pulls in 5th gear double pumping the clutch could make it go in easier...and after a week of doing it you would be used to it and it would feel naturally....but you may have a totally differnet problem than that would help....im not real experienced with the internals of standards....just know the one time my dads old truck had the synchros go out we had to shift like that...but in an old ford truck with a 300 six cylinder it wasn't like we were going for fast shifts...that truck was a piece but after 3 engines 4 times being totaled...it was primer gray, red, blue with a flat bed....only because both beds were trashed each time....memories.....good times good times...wish I could help with more advice....
Hmmm...interesting that a lot of you have problems with synthetic oils in your
T 45's. I've used synthetic Redline D4ATF in my T45 for a few years now and have no problems with shifting or grinding. I don't know about other synthetics but D4ATF is made for our trannys. Have a look at this link. Red Line Synthetic Oil - D4 ATF

Ya I did some research and found lots of people using synchromesh, so thats what I bought. When I got the car it had some different smelling red fluid in it. Different from a dex/merc iii I mean. So maybe that was a synthetic ATF? I'll try some regular ATF in the spring to see what happends.
+38636. Dex/merc cheapy is where it's at. I tried Royal Purple and used it for about 8 miles. wouldnt shift above 5k rpms. Drained it out and bought standard ATF. It's sad I paid more money for 1 quart of RP then I did for 4 quarts of the cheap stuff....

A few months ago i swapped out my Mobile ATF (blows)for pennzoil synchromesh. Its the same as the GM stuff just available at your local autoparts store without the mark up from a GM dealer. I found allot of people using it so i figured id give it a try. I have no issues with it and the transmission goes into gear like butter. Everyone will have their opinions i personally only listen to the ones who have actually tried it to tell the good and bads.

the penzoil syncro mesh should work its not synthetic right? JUst thicker

Its basically a semi-synthetic blend. It will work fine its an improved fluid from the old basic dex/merc.You will here your goods and bads with everything i personally have nothing but good things to say about it comeing from basic atf. Do some research you will see that outside svtp sn95 sections other mustangs enthusiast have plenty good things to say about syncromesh/other fluids in thier T-45 aswell.
(Here is some info from pennzoil's site)
PENNZOILŪ SYNCHROMESH FLUID is a synchromesh transmission fluid designed for certain manual transaxles and
manual transmissions used by General Motors or Chrysler. PENNZOILŪ SYNCHROMESH FLUID is formulated with
high quality paraffinic base stocks, a fluidity modifier, multifunctional performance additives, corrosion inhibitors, a foam
suppressor and a shear stable viscosity index improver additive. It provides excellent oxidation stability, low temperature
performance, excellent synchronizer performance and compatibility with yellow metals, such as bronze, brass and copper
components found in manual transaxles and transmissions. This product will satisfactorily lubricate General Motors or
Chrysler manual transaxles and transmissions from -40°C to +150°C.
Transmission shifts much smoother now, as smooth as a T-45 can get anyway. Couldn't be happier with the results, and the fifth gear grind seems to have stopped. I've owned the car for 14,000 miles now, so there is no telling how long the old fluid had been in there for.
I think for now on I will continue to use standard dex/merc fluid.

There you go...problem solved.
Whatever works for you, might not work for someone else.
Namely me, I put in RP 2 yrs. ago, no problemo here, works fine,no grind!
