I would save he money and do something else. A good friend of mine did the stage 3's and new springs, retainers, locks etc... and ended up dropping a valve and ending his motor after 1000 miles.
All the $$$$ he spent just for sound.
I'm not really a big fan of the sound to be honest with you. Leave that for the 60-70's muscle cars.

does he know why it dropped a valve.,. ie improper install, over rev.,etc
what was the difference on fuel millage and can they be done with the motor in the car
whats a ball park guess for total$$$ with a good set up of cams....... any price difference with custom ground>
It would be a PITA to install cams with the engine in the car only for the reason of timing the cams once installed. It would be a lot easier with the engine out of the car.
Off the shelf cams (Comp, Crower, GT) will run you anywhere from $300-1250, and all will require aftermarket springs (another $400 or so). Custom grinds are going to run you $1500+ and again you will need aftermarket springs.

I did crower stage III's and springs in my car, no probs so far after 3000 miles.
Did the install myself with the engine in the car. Also had to grind some material off of the cam caps because of the higher lift of the exhaust cams. Im running them with a 2.3 whipple with stock tb, so I dont think im seeing the full potential of the cams due to the stock tb. But I am very pleased with the results nonetheless.
The M55 is the FRPP exhaust right? Um, I thought that was a pretty quiet exhaust until the baffles open up.
There is the FR500 and the M55. The FR500 is the dual baffle with one being load and at high rpms gets loud. The M55 is hella loud all the time. I think the SLP loud mouth is the only one that competes.
For cams and springs I think its near $1.5-2K. Custom cams are like $100 more if that. Some are the same. If you have the tools to install them your self that will save money and the one guy claims he did it in car. Otherwise you are looking at another $2K for install from a good shop. All for a few HP.
Depending on the custom grind you get will effect how radical it sounds. Also depending on how aggressive you do will effect how bad your gas mileage gets and how bad you drivabilty is.
hey guys, i think is bad ass to see a mod motor like this cam, i love it, and i know u say there gains arent there, but can anyone show me the gains that are there, i just wana see real numbers to compare, thanks
Kenne Bell 2.4L 25psi P&P heads. Added stage III cams and gained a whopping 23rwhp. Thats $130 per HP.
I would do cams in a hearbeat if i have the money. I think the sound and the gain is worth it as long as it doesn't change the drivability of the car.
Again the bigger gains you get the more you will lose dirvability. Its one or the other nort both. The key to Custom grind is you can hit that sweet spot that off the shelf cams cant. You get max power and still maintain drivbilty.

Where is the best place to purchase Custom Grind Cams?

Hey, thanks for clarifying the exhaust issue.

hey guys, when u say it may take the drivabilty away, what does it really do? and are we talking about 5-6 mpg's here
wow, 23 more rwhp, wow, i know what u mean now, im guessing thats peak though, did it help under the curve any?
The driveability issue I see from time to time and many see with bigger cams is problems keeping an idle. Stalling out is very common. I will find more info. I say if the engine is out then do it but to just do the cams for no other reason its really a waste. I did mine 3.5 years ago before alot was know on cams and I do not think Comp was even outwith their Cobra cams. My engine was blown so I did it then.
I think custom grinds are the way to go. I've been personally kicking the idea around to do cams. But i also think it would be a good time to replace the pistons and weak links
