The crew over at VMP Performance have, not surprisingly, been digging deep into planning their modification strategy for the 2018 5.0 Coyote V8 Powered Mustang GT.  It’s no secret at this point that the 5.0 is due for some major updates, and those changes will bring with them a new set of challenges.  To say that VMP is eager to get their hands dirty is an understatement.

Out with the traditional liners, in with the PWT coating technology.

The $65,000 question when it comes to making power with any modern Mustang is the ability to tune the ECU.  The 2018 Mustang tune is by far the largest and most complicated to date.  In fact, the tune file is reportedly twice the size of the 2017 file.  There’s two reasons for that.  First, the Variable-Cam-Timing strategy is totally new.  And second, the 2018 Coyote has two separate fuel systems.

We are all familiar with the Multi-Port EFI systems that have graced the runners of Mustang V8s for the better part of 30 years, but the 2018 5.0 goes one step farther.  In addition to the traditional system the Coyote will now sport a high-pressure Direct-Injection fuel system (“DI”).  This dual fuel system setup was fist introduced to the Ford public with the 2017 F-150 Raptor’s and Ford GT’s 3.5L EcoBoost engine.

This direct injection high pressure fuel pump is but one of the many additions to the 2018 Coyote V8.

In Raptor form this fuel system (with the aid of a pair of turbos) has been shown to be capable of producing some serious power.  VMP Performance is probably best known for their superb 2.3L TVS Superchargers, and all of those kits require custom tuning which VMP is happy to expertly provide.

Recently VMP’s Justin Starkey sat down in front of the camera with our friend Evan Smith to discuss the outlook for modding the 2018.  We have to agree with Justin’s assessment, while there will most certainly be a learning curve the upside potential for modification is undoubtedly going to be impressive.  With 12:1 compression, plenty of precisely delivered fuel, and aggressive cams there’s going to be something to be had by uncorking it.  While the public’s opinon on the restyling of the 2018 Mustang may not be 100% settled Justin and Evan have probably hit the nail on the head, basically everyone is going to love this new evolution of the 5.0L V8.
