2010 GT here with 19k miles. Diff whines a little starting at about 35mph, the whine gets louder as speed increases, and is apparent only under load. At coasting, there is no whine.

Diff whine indicates something amiss, so I started by changing diff fluid; old fluid was dirty and had small amount of metallic dust mixed in. Looked around and things appear OK in there, but I measured backlash and it is .017". So my questions are:
1) Should I plan on entire rebuild?
2) Or can I get away with just adjusting backlash back to specs?
3) Pinion preload is likely zero by now. How critical is that?

My basic plan is to re-use all existing parts; adjust backlash to factory spec (I would shoot for .008" to .010"), and then use marking compound to check ring/pinion mesh pattern. Assuming mesh pattern OK, would that suffice for most of you?
