Thousands applied to buy the Ford GT and the online configurator is a hit

Unless you were off the grid last week, you know that Ford started taking applications for potential buyers of the 2017 Ford GT production car. While many online outlets touted that the car was on sale, that’s not quite true. Ford is taking applications from serious buyers and vetting them. The company will chose buyers that have a long history of Ford support and that are likely to drive and enjoy the car.

So far the company has received over 7,000 applications and the online process has only been open for less than a week. By the time applications close, the competition should be pretty fierce for the right to own one of the 500 production Ford GTs built in the first two model years—250 each year.

While most of us won’t be able to afford the EcoBoost supercar with an asking price that starts at around $400,000 before you check off any options, there was good news for the rest of us as well. Alongside the opening of the applications, Ford launched a configurator that lets us all build the virtual Ford GTs of our dreams.

“Thanks to all the fans of the all-new Ford GT, with more than 180,000 enthusiasts in the U.S. alone having visited the www.FordGT.com site since its launch last Wednesday. Almost 100,000 U.S. fans—more than half of all visitors to the site—have checked out the website’s configurator, which lets anyone build the Ford GT of their dreams,” says Ford. “The digital tool lets visitors choose the Ford GT exterior colors and stripes, wheel options, types of carbon fiber trim, along with interior themes, and provides links to share images of their virtual build via social media.”

So far the most popular paint option selected on the configurator is Liquid Blue, the same color we first laid eyes on when Ford pulled the wraps off the Ford GT at the North American International Auto Show back in 2015.

The Ford GT will arrive later this year and if you want one in Liquid Blue or any of the other colors, you still have time to submit your application. You aren’t too late yet, but online submissions close on May 12, 2016, at 11:59 p.m. EDT. So if you are a true blue Ford fan with $400,000 or so to spend, head over to FordGT.com right now and sign up to buy one.

It doesn’t surprise us that the sinister Matte Black paint scheme is currently running second only to Liquid Blue in the configurator popularity contest.

What is interesting is that Frozen White—the default color on the configurator—is also proving to be one of the more popular choices for those building virtual Ford GTs.
