Why the love affair with 26 spline input shafts?

There has never been a question of me upgrading to 26-spline.

I was just debating on changing out the half shafts. Typically, when do half shafts break? Is it during a high RPM lauch or slamming through the gears...say on street tires?

typically, when you wheel hop. I have seen some failures with just straight on hooking like a SOB with a lot of power, but rare.

this should get moved to smackdown, lol

sweet, there is a market for the 10 spline input shaft. I will have to start saving them instead of throwing them in the trash.
 Why do you think I wanted mine back!
I guess I was pissed I read several threads were it seemed totally unecessary for a guy to put off a clutch that he needed in order to get an input shaft.

I guess i'm just different than most people. if my 10 spline broke and I had a brand new 10 spline clutch and didn't need a new one. my first thought would be that I could get a great deal on a used ten spline maybe $50.

your project: 26 spline $350 + new clutch $350 = $750

my project: 10 spline $50

sounds to me like i could do this 14 more time and still break even.

I was just mad a hearing this is a must do. No, a tune after mods is a must do. The 26 spline is just piece of mind

There you go, OP! Now you have nothing to bitch about! You can just buy his old shaft so you have a cheap replacement when yours finally breaks!

Well, for the price that IRONTERP would sell it for, he do it... lets see $700 / $20 = 35 times, so now you're really winning.

I think you guys are missing my point. It's not a must have, it's nice to have and it is piece of mind. but there is no reason to put off getting a clutch so you can enjoy driving you car just for piece of mind. have you ever driven a car with a slipping clutch? it's not fun because you can't get on it you, can't even put it in 6th gear and touch the gas.

there were over 19,000 of these cars made and even if 500 people have broken input shaft thats like 2.6% or maybe 1000 thats 5.2%. I like the odds that it's not gonna break.

I started not to post, but your attitude towards asking a question and then being educated is a bit off

OP, you fail at asking questions. Here's some advice:

1 - Next time you ask a question, do it in the tone of a newb... not of someone that's been dealing with these cars since their creation.

After numerous pics and stories of peoples experiences of breaking them, you still think it is "piece of mind?" How could anyone refer to upgrading to something that will break as piece of mind? That's sounds idiotic. Children's car seats have weight limits... when the weight of your child exceeds the specs of that car seat, you get a different car seat, as to not put your child in danger. When you mod a car far beyond its factory state, putting more stress on all the parts that weren't intended for such loads, you upgrade the weak links. Sounds like you wanna leave your overgrown kid in an infant car seat.:bored:

Now you're starting to sound hypocritical... unless your definition of "getting on it" is 1/2 or 3/4 throttle. You better not ever go WOT because thats asking for trouble. Have you not heard the experiences of just the few thats even cared to try and educate you about their ROLL racing experience breaking them? Does anyone in here thats roll raced before not go WOT, or as you would say, "get on it?"

I think you guys are missing my point. It's not a must have, it's nice to have and it is piece of mind.

No we get your point. Your point is that you clearly have no idea what's all involved in changing an input shaft (besides what you've read in a few threads), how much it costs in labor to change one, or how much money you waste changing one part at a time as they go bad.

Advice: Leave your car stock and your argument is valid. I would actually agree with you. Pulley, tune - the most basic and least expensive way to add 50+hp and "get on it," its only a matter of time before you break something. I don't call that piece of mind, I call that necessary. My time and car is more important than sitting on the side of the road waiting for the right tow truck to show up because the one that showed up the first time after an hour is not equipt to pick up a car such as mine without damaging it because it sits too low, while my son is in the back seat crying because daddy didn't would wait and spend $350 to insure that "this" - meaning breaking the input shaft problem - would'nt happen.

I'm not the expert but the ones that are already posted in this thread.

Do what you will.

^ very well put!

I can't believe this is still being discussed. I agree with the op that "some" of the things we upgrade on these cars may be because "every on the forum says to do it", but in this case, I think you are dead wrong. The ONLY way, I feel it is plenty strong, is on a completely stock, only street driven car - that is never on drag radials! Any other scenario, and it's on borrowed time in my opinion. Would I rip the trans out "just" to upgrade it? Hell no! But, as I said earlier, when my clutch goes, it will surely be changed!

Do you need the longer splines on a twin disc app?

I wondered about this also. Since nobody answered this, I can only assume that it's not an issue, either way, since some people have run the twin on the stock shaft (don't know why you would do that, though :rollseyes).

Haven't heard of any "breaking" per se like the 10 spline's, but I bent my 26 spline at the Terminator Shootout in May. Really pissed me off and set me back $325 that I wasn't planning on spending. But gotta pay to play when you dump the clutch at 6 grand.......

Well from reading this thread I would say there is a market for that "Bent" 26 spline input shaft. Would look really good on someones work bench next to those "Great" 10 spline shafts...

wondering the same thing how many 26 have failed ?. also what makes them stronger. larger dia, better grade of steel ...what.
Also how many 10 are running around making over 450 hp that have survived.
FYI the failers make the threads, Just like the tick back in the early days, the few isolated cases made the headlines....just saying'

has there been any independent testing, proving the claimed benefit.

Altho the "splines" are smaller on the 26 its the base diameter of the shaft is what makes it or breaks it. The smaller splines also provide more surface area vs. the 10spline. It's the same principle for rear axle shafts. 35 vs. 31 vs. 28 and so on. The more splines the stronger. Measure the base diameter of each shaft and you'll find the 26spline is bigger diameter.

507/488 stock 10 spline with a spec 3 going on 3 years now. Has seen rare track use due to a shitty schedule, but it's held up when I've gone. Also I use a 275/40 mickey on stock wheels. Last time I was at the track I cut 1.7x 60's so I'd say that I'm in the average area for launches. A lot of it might have to do with shock load and how the rest of the car is set up. Then again I'm not an engineer so I concede.

^ this is my point if all the 10 that held up posted , instead of just the failure's ...public opinion would change. just using this particular thread to make a point

Did you real the whole thread? The OP wanted to find out what the deal was with the tendency of the informed Terminator owners to switch to the 26 spline shaft when doing a clutch change. He was given the answer quite thoroughly.

But, bottom line is, if you would like to keep your 10 spline input shaft, go for it. It's you car to mod as you feel is appropriate. If it breaks and you would like to replace it with another 10 spline, my offer still stands for you to buy mine for $10 plus $10 shipping. It has 25,000 miles on it and probably 20 track passes but is in great shape.

And to answer your earlier question, I am the only person that I personally know of that has bent/damaged a 26 spline.

I know of two local guys (to me) that have bent a 26 spline input shaft.
Just throwing that out there to support your comments.

Thanks Unit. Guess it's more common than we thought. They don't seem to literally break apart like the 10 spline shafts. Mine was only slightly bent but I'm sure it would of caused a vibration if I had reinstalled it.

Yeah, I've never seen a snapped 26 spline input shaft like you would see with a stock 10 spline shaft. The 26 spline shafts seem to bend like you said.

another argument for some of you that want to continue this thread.....

then why do the viper and corvette come with 26 spline input shafts from the factory? And don't give me the reason of more power from the factory. 99% of the people on here increase their power to the same or more than those cars.

does the gt500 come with a 26 spline input shaft?
