are SCT tuners made for specific cars?

I have a buddy that traded in his '08 for a new 5.0 and he is giving me his SCT tuner if I can use it on my car. I have a 2010 GT500, will I be able to take his SCT to the local tuner/dyno guy and get him to use that hand held to tune my car? My sound like a silly question but I've never dealt with them before. Thanks for the info in advance guys.

as long as he returned the vehicle to stock your tuner should be able to use, may need a update but your tuner should be able to handle it

He returned it to stock so I'm covered there. Anyone else have any input on this or have actually done this before?

Yes. I had an Xcal2 for an 06 GT. Then I bought a 99 Cobra and used the same Xcal for the Cobra

Like stated..your friend must set his car back to "stock tune" before you can use the xcal,

I was told the X-cal2 can be switched between 5 cars total. I assume your car would be car #2??

my car would be #2, the situation was abit suspect just because with me not knowing much about the hand helds and my car being FI and his car NA, I needed more info on this exchange, you know

you should be fine unless there was some kind of communication change between the years of the cars, but a firmware update should cover that fine. If your tuner says he can't get it done PM me and I will help you get it done

For the most part, all SCT tuners support all cars, with the exception of new technology that has been introduced by Ford over the years (which is the primary reason SCT has had to release new devices).

The X2 works on anything up to a 10, but I only recommend it for 07-10 Manual trans cars. In 07 for the F150s (all are autos) and 07 or 08 for the Auto Mustangs, Ford went to a 2mb file size, which the X2 does not deal with very well, it will only hold two custom tunes as it does not have enough memory.

There are two versions out there of the X3, the regular X3 and the X3 plus. The plus has more memory to support the huge file sizes found on newer vehicles (some files are 3-4mb). The X3 plus is required for 09 up F150 and 11 up Mustang. You can tell a tuner is a plus because it starts with XP on the serial number rather than X3.

The 6.4L trucks have a unique Livewire and X3 device made specifically for them, and it only works on them.

Justin, thanks for the feedback. I will be contacting you shortly in reference to my 5.4 L swap.
