'95 "R" Fuel tank replacement

We presume we are on borrowed time with our current fuel cell so................

Mark Smith and myself are working with "Glenn's Performance" to produce an aluminum fuel tank that looks like the fuel cell it will replace. The goal we have for this project is to create a tank that is a direct strap-in-bolt-up unit. We want to utilize the existing attached items: fuel filler tube and flange, the entire fuel pickup/return/pump array with it's flange intact, and the level sensor again with it's flange.
Best case, just gasket and bolt the items directly to the new tank.
My car is going to be Mr Guiney Pig so I'm in the process of pulling the tank, preforming a bladderectomy, and sending the empty fuel cell shell to Glenn.
Then it is up to the master.

^^^^^^^I got beat-up over this suggestion on this forum when I mentioned it a few years ago............


My thought for an option was to take the bladder rings (shown below), have them migging in the tank holes, mig closed the weep hole (bottom right front), pressure check the tank, and and then bolt the tank back in place for the perfect/original fit. All fittings would work (and look) exactly as they did before the tank was removed, except no leaking bladder issues. Heck, you could even install the anti-slosh foam sections through the top hole, just like original.

But...........if the car were to be used as intended (racing), the tank "appearing to be a Fuel Safe cell", but not really......that could be a deadly issue for a future buyer/owner.

Great ideas, thanks. I am hoping not to get too much negative reaction from this project since a replacement tank that looks similar to the fuel cell is already available. The fuel cell tub is thin gauge aluminum and probably is not suitable for holding fuel without the bladder. The new tank will be a more substantial higher gauge unit.
We are just trying to fine tune the fabrication to make it an easier installation utilizing the original parts.
If you still have the rings and dont mind sending them to Glenn to be used as templates, it would be much appreciated.

I would like to be in the loop on this project, as long as the look is exact to the original, and costs dont get out of hand. I also have 2 friends w 95R's that would be interested as well, as we were just discussing this topic Monday. Are you exploring options for a '00 as well? I have no interest in replacing bladders on either car, as they will leak again some day...

I ended up cleaning up and installing an entire stock 15 gallon fuel tank, and accessories, that I got for just over $100. I just could not see spending $1500 at the time. I saved every little piece of my fuel bladder and would love to have the near factory look/set up. As long as it financially makes sense.

Sorry, I'm a little late to this thread. If your car is not leaking and you haven't pulled the tank yet I have my original tub you could use. The previous owner of my car bought a brand new complete Fuel Safe cell when the original began to leak. Let me know if this would make things easier. I'm interested in this project also because I think my current tank already has about 4-5 years on it.

I would be very interested to put in a few fake in panels to lower fuel capacity. I dont want a 20 gallon tank but I want it to be an exact looking replacement on the outside. Im never going to do an endurance race and I dont want the extra weight in fuel. Yea yea put less fuel in it.. but there is a higher risk of fuel slosh. I never stay out on the track with any of my car at less than 1/4 tank. Most track sessions are 20 to 30 mins and thats around 7 gallons.. my ideal placement tank would be 12 to 14 gallons but an exact looking from the outside.

Just an idea of what I would want in my fuel cell replacement.

As you have read, we are going to send Glenn an empty fuel cell tub to be used as a template. I have personally talked with Glenn, good guy, I believe we can work out a price comparable to his current tank line.
