My FRPP Recaro's just came in...

The ride has been a little bumpy but it looks like I finally have something I can work with. It all started when Ford decided to include the optional Recaro seats for the 2011 MY. For me, the process went like this

- 2011's have them and I want them bad. Take out's are rather $carce.
- Speculation that FRPP may offer them ensues.
- 2012's have them available as well. Take out's are still $carce.
- In early 2012, FRPP makes them available in fabric as opposed to leather.
- 2013's have them available. Tak....you guessed it, big bucks for a used pair.

I gave up on FRPP ever offering leather. I found a pair of the FRPP fabric seats for sale that were barely used and for a very reasonable price. Problem was, the seller didn't want to ship. After working hard to convince him to ship, he agrees but states it might be a couple of weeks or so. Then, out of nowhere an ad from FRPP pops up stating that they were being offered in leather! I'm leery of the listing (price seems to low and the ad is ambiguous) and fire off some email(s) as to the legitimacy. I was able to cancel the deal on the fabric FRPP's. Then, in the wink of an eye, FRPP pulls the listing from their online catalog.

POOF!

The leather listing morphs into a second fabric seat listing. It covers an additional model year and is more expensive. Word slips out that FRPP will discontinue the less expensive fabric offering very soon. I inquire again as to whether FRPP will ever offer the Recaro's in leather and get a resounding no. The order goes in for a pair of the 'B' seats (the older, less expensive seats) as the white flag was now at the top of the pole.

Yesterday, my wife wakes me up to tell me that she found something in the back of the mailbox.

Seriously? No advance notice? And instead of an official slip, the above. I call and find out that it was legitimate (blurring courtesy of me). I ask, why no call to tell me that the seats were heading my way? I'm told it was because FRPP failed to indicate to CONWAY that it was necessary. Same thing happened when I purchased my FRPP Boss rear seat delete/X brace kit. So I make arrangements to have it delivered today between the hours of 10am and 2 pm (God I hate that). Today comes and since I'm a sleepless zombie working the nightshift, I call to see if I can pick it up this morning. Come on down says Conway.

So with 50 mph winds and heavy rain an hour or so away, I pick them up and haul ass homeward. I got them in the garage as quick as I could. A little nervous, I was...

Turns out, the seats are fine. Phew. Seriously FRPP/Recaro, those "boxes" are lacking a bit in the protection department. Somebody in Risk Management/Purchasing/Packaging needs a rather large boot in the ass. I know that Recaro has been shipping seats in similar boxes for years now (I purchased some Recaro Pole Position seats for my Fox body a few years ago) but that is no excuse. Everything else I have ever purchased from SVO/Ford Motorsport/FRPP has always been extremely well protected.

On to the seats.

My apologies for the picture quality in this thread. No sleep had me take the easy way out and use my Droid. I'll get better quality shots when I can but for now understand that the photos are a bit weak and not representative of the real thing.

A quick glance looked to show that a sensor swap in order to use these in my '09 shouldn't be that bad. I'm no upholstery guy but I'm willing to tackle this one just like anything else. More when I'm no longer one of the living dead...

Tob,

I just bought a set of leathers that I am going to be putting in my 09. I'm also going to make them power. I have not however found anyone clearly describing what needs to be done. I've heard everything from the airbags are not compatible to a sensor which I'm assuming is the seatbelt sensor. Can you shed some light?

Funny. I've seen a few Recaro boxes arrive like that a few times on various Forums.

Glad they were still mint. And they look like sex.

Looks great, congrats on the end to the delivery saga. Will look forward to your upholstery work. Seats look very, very close if not identical...I think it may be the material, but the side bolster on the take-out seats looks a little taller/wider? May not be the case, but if it is could always add foam and contour it with an angle grinder/roloc disc.

Good luck!

If you dont mind how much did these run you?

Brace yourself: (Price listed on other websites...)

$2899.00 Fabric
$3199.00 Leather

A bit too much $$ for what you get. They are still heavier than other leather racing seats.

For the money you are better off with these.. unless your looking for a 100% stock look.

Tob: It looks like the outside damage to the packaging was caused by the knuckle-heads in the shipping/transportation chain. Obvious greater damage to one box over the other.
What was the head-room and side space inside the boxes when you opened them????
Deal with it every day, it can be maddening... Glad to hear the seats are in good shape...

The Recaros can be found for $2,500 and probably even less from Tousley. They also have side airbags, which retains the factory safety features.

The Misanos do look nice but are not as comfortable as the Recaros in question.

What's the difference between B and C seats? There's a couple hundred dollar difference in price from tousley.

I was just about to make similar comment

I see them listed as low as $2600 (not a SV so I'll not mention the name) and I bet you could get a 5% discount from that as well. However Tousley is probably around $2300-2350 based on a similar local dealer.

Blaine, those are suggested retail prices and as I said earlier, there is no leather Recaro being offered from FRPP. Paying suggested retail on anything FRPP is aking to paying asking price for a new car. There are a number of vendors here that can beat the suggested retail price handily. In my case, I purchased them from a "Top Ten" FRPP dealer that isn't a paying vendor here. I chose to use them as I have been dealing with them for over twenty years now and they have treated me extremely well. Suffice it to say, the devil himself couldn't have beaten the deal I got. Negotiate well and most anybody can procure a favorable arrangement as well. Many here have been very happy with Tousley (among others, for example) as have I.

Nice buy Tob. I will also be purchasing a set of the cloth seats too. I just picked up a set of leather from a GT500 that I am going to be putting on the cloth seats. The take outs are just sooooo pricey.

Can't wait to see your write up. They are always so thorough and well written.

I haven't gotten in deep enough yet, beyond paying attention to every thread on the subject I've ever seen. None of them have provided the data that I like to see. I'll shed as much light as possible come swap time.

Will look forward to your upholstery work. .

Good luck!

A quick study of the framework as well as how the upholstery attaches has me thinking this shouldn't be too bad. Ever the skeptic, I'm sure there will be challenges ahead with this - no doubt.

Tob:

There was a lot of airspace if that is what you are wondering about. It is almost as if Recaro is asking for trouble just so that they can tell everyone that the seats were perfect when they last saw them...

Are they in yet?

Probably a four point/harness down the road.

Are they in yet....you're killing me.

Thank you. I promise to do my best.

Have any shots of the skins you bought (especially where they terminate at the bottom)? I'm interested to see how that swap goes over as I'm in the hunt for a set as well.

I think I'd like to get a set but, that is sad to hear they are already looking to raise the price....kind of like the 2013 TVS once it took off...up went the price!

Looking forward to seeing the install!

I have yet to verify the exact changes but if I find out I'll post up. And I don't think FRPP wanted to charge more for their new assembly. I think it is more a reflection of increases in both fixed and variable costs.
