Just went to Autozone to get some oil. I normally use GC, but they had Pennzoil Ultra for $4.00 a quart and couldn't pass that up. Even the supposed lower grade Pennzoil synthetic oil Pennzoil Platinum cost noticeably more. Normally the Ultra goes for almost $10.

Just thought y'all might want to know that.

4 quarts = a gallon so $4 x 4 = $16 before taxes. Besides Autozone didn't have the Pennzoil Ultra in gallons or at least my local store didn't.

Got 7 quarts and a Motorcraft FL820S filter for $39 before taxes.

I will have to go by my local Auto Zone and check it out. I've already wiped out every quart of Ultra 5W-20 and 10W-30 Wal Mart in my area had on mark down. ~14 quarts I've bought for 4.00-5.00 per quart.

I've never heard of it before, is it that good? I changed the oil in my truck about 200 miles ago but I love to keep a cache of oil and filters anyway.

It's Pennzoils top-of-line motor oil. Pennzoils synthetics are the "Platinum" line, and the "Ultra" line. It's biggest selling point is that it's suppose to be one of the best oils on the market at cleaning out the motor. It's very good stuff for an OTC oil product. Obviously your oils such as Red Line, and Amsoil are your best of the best type oils, but I would say Pennzoil Ultra is on par with your Mobil 1, Valvoline, Castrol, etc synthetics which means it's a very good oil.

Good to know, I've always used Mobil 1 and still have about 4 gallons but I usually try to pick up an oil change or two if I can find something comparable for a decent price.

No doubt.

I can tell you that the new Viper, and the new SRT8 motors come factory with Pennzoil Ultra 0W40.

All of the local guys say that anything Pennzoil is completely awful?

Is this a newer formula for Pennzoil or are the locals just mistaken? My 5.0 really needs an oil change...

Pretty much any name brand synthetic oil is a pretty good product. Pennzoil is good oil. People like to talk shit and act like they know it all, but I ran the older Pennzoil Platinum several times in my Terminator and it ran as good using it as it did with Mobil 1 5W30 or GC. Pennzoil Ultra is very good OTC oil. All brands get shit talked about them because everyone's just I know everything, blah, blah, blah.

Ultra is better than Platinum. Over on BobIsTheOilGuy PU as they call it is a forum favorite.

And just for reference, the new SN rated version of the Pennzoil Ultra has showed the best results. Can't go wrong with it for a over the counter oil you can get just about anywhere...

Pennzoil Ultra Full Synthetic Motor Oil - Pennzoil

I'd place Ultra beyond the others listed. It returns better UOAs. The new API SN formulation with ultra low NOACK is game changing. Amazing what the new GTL (Gas To Liquid) base stocks can do. If I were buying over the counter, Ultra is my #1 choice. However, it's hard to find in my neck of the woods at a good price. Wal Mart sold the remaining stock at closeout prices. I bought 14 quarts for testing purposes at 4.00 to 5.00 a quart. Pep Boys sells it for $9.79 a quart. OUCH!

Amsoil rumored that if GTL technology was promising as advertized, they would make the change. I've noticed Amsoil's Signature Series lubricants NOACK % ratings have decreased slightly. I wonder if it's related.

Not to take away from that UOA, however...there is information there (and information lacking) that can tell a slightly different story.

1. The car has 40,000 miles. Any decent lubricant would show wear that low, as the engine is already broken in well.
2. The engine consumes oil, about 1 quart per 5,000 miles. This will help with duration as new oil is used to top off
3. No TBN results on the sample.

This is why Blackstone FAILS. You have to pay extra for TBN testing.

Did you ever hit up your local Autozone? If so was their prices the same as mine? I goofed up and grabbed 2 quarts of 10W30(or you could say someone else also goofed up and put them in the 5W30 rack) so I mixed oil a little.

I know the new Viper, and all SRT8 motors use I believe the Pennzoil Ultra 0W40. I wonder if the Pennzoil Ultra 0W40 is a true synthetic like GC, and Mobil 1 0W40 seeing as it's a Euro Blend, and it's warranted buy most European manufacturers if I'm not mistaken. It's suppose to be the only oil sold in the US that Ferrari recommends for use in their cars.

No, I haven't done that yet....and I bet if they did have it marked down, I've already missed it.

I really want UOAs of Ultra 0W-40 from a Ford Modular engine like the GT500.

I thought Mobil 1 0W40 broke down to a 30 wt very quickly?

Well you can say that about most any oil. On the interwebs people will talk chit about such and such a thing to make what they are fond of look better. I'm sure any major oil companies product will do it's job of protecting the motor just fine as long as keep it maintained. In some sense oil is oil.(when comparing same wt's and synthetics to synthetic, and conventional oil to conventional oil) Obviously it's a little more complex than that but what I'm saying is most mechanics will tell you to not stress over the brand of oil you run, and as long as you change it when you're suppose to you will likely be just fine regardless of whether you're running Mobil 1, RP, Valvoline, Pennzoil, Amsoil, or just budget Autozone brand oil, etc, etc.

With that said didn't a few year ago Quaker State started selling poor oil or something? I want to say I remember people were talking about that, but I think they are suppose to have gotten back to making good oil. Like I was saying B/F that might just be hearsay, but I believe it was kind of a big/known thing.
