thanks to my Jeep doing what Jeeps do best, i had to drive the Cobra to work this morning. Ford saves the day again. (side note: Cobra runs like a mother in sub 10* weather)

after the cold weather mechanical issues i decided to grab some hot chow on the way to work. hitting a BK i'm familiar with i place my order then proceed to the window.

kid at the window was eye balling my car hard as i pulled up. before he takes my cash he says "is that a V6 or 8?". with a polite smile i simply say "it's a V8". he continues to check out the car between counting change and waiting for my order to magically appear from the back.

isn't the sound of a V8 fairly recognizable? my car has 1 7/8 headers, o/r x and stingers... it's not exactly quiet. this particular drive-through also has a 6' privacy fence running the length of the lane, making the sound that much louder. who doesn't know the sound of a V8 idling?

.... i blame hybrids, mini-vans and hippie cars for kids not knowing what a proper V8 sounds like.

after the way my morning started i thought this was amusing and wanted to share.

I've been asked that before. It's usually girls though.

I had a young guy at an advance auto that asked my year make and model and I said 2003 ford mustang cobra, and the guys eyes lit up and said "oh man is it an svt edition?! Cause the svt cobra's are faster than the regular cobra's" :D

I had two teenagers ask me a a few years back why my car sounded so rough. I had a built cammed 2003 Mach 1 lol I told them it had a miss.

1. I only enjoy the car when it's cold.

2. BK is considered food?

3. Dumb questions deserve dumb responses. Mine would have been, "it's a 4 banger, no give me my GD food!"

4. I recently read a Car and Driver article about Gen X'ers and how their so wrapped up in tech. that the don't give a hoot about cars. They took a kid around in a friggin Aston Martin all day an he never raised his head from stupid video games. :mj:

those that store their car for cold months are missing out!

2. BK is considered food?

not so much but it keeps me from getting hungry before lunch time.

kid was polite and seemed genuinely interested in the car. who knows, he may have an inner gear head trying to get out.

at 19 my son is on his second Mustang (recently traded his GT for a Mach 1), so proud of that kid!!!
he would punch a kitten to spend the day in an Aston Martin.

i'll take the drive-through kid over the "my 10 second honduh will bury your rustang" guy. (it was later determined he was talking low 10's in the 1/8 :nonono: )

Glad to hear your son is a car nut, his type is disappearing fast! Don't get me started on Honduh's. When I was in my DSM tuning phase (Eclipse, Talon, Laser, etc.) we even hated those guys. When one goes by breaking ear drums I always comment, "that's what 50 hp sounds like." They still don't understand it's a damn economy car. Anything to get noticed nowadays, even when its for the wrong reason.

thing is he's a really cool dude, just ill-informed as to what some cars are capable of. to his credit, his car isn't all super rice.

still a honda, still not fast.

The sad thing the question is on the way of being replaced with "Is that a six cylinder or 4?"

Long live the V-8!!!

Tell them it's a Ford Hemi. And watch the reaction. Odds are if they thought it was a V6 they probably would believe it's a "Ford Hemi". It's sometimes fun to play with people in a good natured way.

I get more of the "old guys" asking 'what engine I have'. I say "4.6" and the I usually hear "well my _____ has a v-8". I usually come back with " I bet it's fast". I'm gonna start using the v-10 response though :)

V10 with NOS sounds like a hoot!!!

although the thought of driving away after telling them it's a 4-banger seems like it would be fun too.

We all started somewhere...why not spend some time to tell him how cool the car is?

while the comical responses would amuse me, the honest approach and willingness to talk to people about my car are what will always happen.

i come from the Jeep community where a simple fuel stop can turn into an hour long conversation about tires and lift with a stranger.

Because it's so much easier to be a complete asshole and further push the young guys over to Honda. Cuz everyone knows how increadible a V 8 is. I just dont understand not taking a moment and educating someone. So instead of the kid saying what a great car he just saw he will tell everyone how much of a dick the guy in the Mustang was.
