Thinking about a Raptor...Noob Questions

Currently I drive a 2005 F250 Powerstroke. Right now the truck has roughly 115,000 miles. I have owned the truck since new in April of 2005 and the truck is paid off.

I'm pretty sure that the transmission is going to need rebuilt in the near future as well as the usual wear and tear on the suspension items. In the past year I've put out roughly 3 grand on repairs including new instrument cluster, all new rotors, pads, backing plates, exhaust work, fuel pump and so forth. It's at the age now where I'm positive it will start to nickel and dime me so I've been toying around with the idea of getting a new truck. Now the bed is starting to rust badly above the wheel wells.

I've been thinking about the Raptor as a replacement. I want to know what everyone here thinks about them. What's the pros and cons of these trucks? I don't need a race truck, I have the Shelby for my spirited driving, but I'm used to the instant torque of a modified diesel. What is the performance like it these bad boys?

I don't care about fuel mileage but I do tow mildly from time to time. It will be my daily driver and will see normal street duty, occasional towing, visiting work sites and taking the wife to the mall. In other words, I will do a little of everything in the truck.

Considering I just purchased the Shelby, I don't think I can talk the wife into springing for a new Raptor, possibly a leftover 13 is there is such a thing. But I figured if I could find a used 12 or 11 and trade my truck in plus some cash down that I'd get a more reliable driver relatively cheap.

I was just wondering if anyone else here as made a similar switch? Is there certain things to be on the lookout for with these trucks when talking used versus new? Or should I just keep my current ride and build it stronger when it breaks down?

I'd appreciate any insight as I really do not know a whole lot about these trucks. Thanks in advance.

On my 2nd one.
It's hands down everything and more. It's the perfect all around truck.
I have no negative comments or cons to report.
You will be happy with the trade .

I had a 2006 F250 Powerstroke with about 42,000 miles on it. Since I was not towing like I was and my drive to work is only 2 miles through town, a year ago I bought my Raptor. Either way my fuel mileage was going to be crap, but gas is less expensive. I tow my RTV with it and will probably eventually tow the Shelby with it. I know many that do about the same with no problems. The suspension is not set for towing like most people would think with the 6.2. Mine is a daily driver and is very comfortable, I am really pleased with the ride and comfort. You can get some good tunes to make it better. And my wife had no say in getting the Raptor. Nor did she care! There are a few used ones around, not many, and they command a premium still. Be patient and maybe what you are looking for will pop up.

I dont know if your going to keep the SD or not but im sure it will still bring decent money on trade in. 100k on a diesel motor is nothing, and the issues you are having sound like fairly common problems.

As long as you dont need to load a ton of weight or tow machinery i think you will be happy with the raptor.

I really wanted a raptor, but after overloading my f150 multiple times i knew i didnt want to beat up a raptor. They are just too pretty. My wife was pushing for one, she spots them out on the road before i do. But a Superduty right now just suits my needs

Thanks everyone for the input. I have an email out to my dealer to see what he can find me. There is one local to me that doesn't seem too bad but all the others are down towards the city and from what I see have ADMs on them and that's not going to happen.

For the prices good used ones are bringing I'm starting to think that I might as well go new on a 13/14 model. As of right now I'm not fond of the new 15 reboot on the f150 and I'm not sure if I want to wait and see what the possible 16 Raptor has to offer.

The one work truck we have has a 6.2 in it and I've been impressed with its performance even though it's loaded with a couple thousand pounds of tools. It's a helluva lot better than the 5.4s we have running around which are gutless turds for the most part.

Idk, I just think it will be hard to give up the 800 pounds of torque and turbo whistle of my current truck, those are the only two things I would really miss the most. But I'm really digging the race red, blue and white Raptors lol.

And yes, my wife loves them and is actually the one who initiated the convo about the swap. It's funny because we will be driving down the road and I'll point out all the Cobras and Shelby's and she will almost jump out of her seat when she sees a Raptor lol. What can I say? She's into trucks.

It will tow just fine regardless of what people say.
I suspect the ones that think the raptor isn't great for towing a car, have actually never done it.

I love mine. Resale value is pretty high on them so even a slightly used 2013 sells around invoice or more compared to a new 2014. If you can wait a few months I would try and order a 2014 for around invoice. If you want to go that route you will need to act quick becuase the rumor is that the order banks will close soon. Some dealers that don't have an allocation have already been told they can no longer order one.
I also had a 2005 F250 HD Diesel Screw cab as a tow vehicle. The Raptor is a hell of a lot more fun as a DD.

Bought mine last Jan (waited 6 months for her to arrive) and still loving every minute of driving her!

Finding a good inexpensive used one will be tough. Raptor's hold their resale value very well and Ford has not said a word about building any on the 2015+ platform.. so it's made the 2014's harder to come by at anything less then MSRP or more. That in turn has kept the used value pretty high.

I traded my 2009 F350 for my 2013 Raptor and don't regret my decision at all. The Raptor looks better, rides better, has more creature comforts and can still be a truck when you need it to be. I honestly can't think of one thing I don't like about my Raptor. Once you get it in the dirt is when it gets REALLY fun. I have a GT500, too so I know what you mean about satisfying the need for speed. You might be surprised how much power the Raptor has. I've never once thought that it NEEDED more. Go take one for a test drive and if I was you, I'd make the switch for sure.

I've honestly thought about selling my GT500 too because the Raptor is awesome for a DD but can also fill that "fun" factor.

That's exactly what I'm doing. Selling the GT500 then trading my Hummer in on a Raptor.

I got my dealer coming down to my shop tomorrow to give me a trade in number on my truck while I'm at a meeting. So I'm hoping to have some decent news from that shortly. KBB suggest a truck like mine in "Fair" condition brings an average of 11,900 and 13,200 in "Good" condition for dealer trade in. 15,900 to 17,000 is evidently the average for private sale. I guess I'll see what he comes back with.

I'm hoping that between my trade in and whatever magic they can work I can get a deal done. I've always been a "if it's meant to be it will be guy" so I guess I'm just on the waiting game for now.

Thank you everyone for your responses and input. It is greatly valued.

So I'm thinking about ordering my truck at this time. I've read on here and other places of some people still waiting from October or November for their trucks. Then I've seen people who ordered in February already taking delivery. So I'm just kind of worried about either not getting one or waiting till late summer or early fall to get it.

My dealer says they have allocation and will accept my order. I'm still waiting to see if it can be had at invoice or not.

Best offer I had outside of my dealer was a white four door with MSRP of 54170. I was quoted 52675 plus 9000 trade in. My dealer said they'd be able to do much better than that. I'm meeting with them hopefully this Thursday to go over details.

I just thought I would update this thread a little bit. I wanted to say thank you to everyone who responded and provided their input and advice!

I have found my truck and it is due to arrive on June 10 to my dealer as verified by SVT/Ford (it had a May 23 build date). ETA was June 25 then it was bumped up to June 6 and now back to the 10th lol.

Truck is a 2014 Tuxedo Black SCREW with the Special Edition Package. I'm not thrilled about the bed extender or tailgate step but I'll get over it. The only other option besides this truck was putting through another new order and hoping it got pulled. I didn't want to take my chances on not getting a truck or cementing my place for a late summer delivery so I went a head with this truck.

Basically I ended up with right between high trade in and mid private sale value for my current truck according to KBB and a retail of under MSRP for the Raptor. Out the door price for this truck was actually a couple hundred dollars less than what I could get an 801a & moon roof truck for from other dealers. Considering most of the dealers I talked to either A) would not come off of MSRP or B) wanted ADMs; I'm content with my purchase.

I hope to be posting some pictures of my new truck next week. I think the black will go nicely with my SGM Shelby! The wait has been killing me since April lol.

Sweet. I am glad you were able to find a Raptor.

Why don't you like the bed extender or tailgate step? The cost of it, or you don't use it at all?

Honestly I haven't had any real experience with either options but I just imagine them being a hassle. It just seems like they are something to get bumped around, dinged, scratched and trap water after a washing.

I really don't see myself using them either. On my current truck I either step up on the rear tire and then in the bed or use my drop hitch as a step lol.

Not to mention, I'd rather use the $625 towards Line-X and window tint.

I LOVE my bed extender and tailgate step. After hauling furniture, lawn equipment, mulch, etc. I can't imagine not having them now.

Congrats! Can't wait to see pics. I would have never gone for the bed extender or step either. I use my tailgate as a bench a lot of times, especially during hunting season. The step would just be in the way. I just can't find a use for an extender. It either gets closed in or I go get one of my trailers. Welcome to the Raptor and Shelby owners club!
