i put a window in the drivers side of the block tonight on the way to the track. 9psi and e85 I'm sure I was making close to 700rwhp on a stock motor. I'm not pointing the finger at a tuner, this shit happens. Anyways, short block options that are realistic? What do you recommend and why?

I just bit the bullet and had one done.
It may live for a while unsleeved it may not and the extra $2,100 over a unsleeved block is well worth not doing it twice or destroying it and being back a square one.

I would recommend Wiseco pistons over the rest out there. Especially if you add the Armour coating(patented) it's proven to 60psi boost!

There is a shop in Dallas that specializes in Alum block sleeving that did mine and he is very very good and builds nothing but big hp engines from Ford-chevy-dodge to Lamborghini-Nissan GTR to EVO-Subaru

Yikes sorry to hear that. How did it happen? Just wot and boom or did you lose traction and hit the limiter?

Aight, left the house for the 75 mile trek to the track. About 3 miles from the house is a Valero where I usually fill up but the card reader was inop so I went inside and prepaid a guesstimate of 25$. 30 miles later I was at 3/4 tank. Not to take chances of running out of fuel I topped off at an heb with e85. Drove about 15 miles and went to pass some old caddy, 3rd to 6k, 4th to 5500 or so then coasted. Then noticed the oil light and immediately shut it off. Pulled over and noticed mass amounts of oil on the ground. took a gander and saw a hole in the pan and block relative to cyl 6. So maybe it was fuel, maybe my luck ran out. Either way a short block capable of 1000 is needed

god i hate to see this.. really sucks, i wonder if being tuned for e85 and only probably getting e70 (because of the winter mix) had anything to do with it? hopefully the tuner left some wiggle room for fuel mixture variances..

Sorry to hear about your setup..

I have a similar setup on my 2013 Roush Stage 3 9psi boost on E85 dyno tuned at 688rwhp. Can you provide some more info about your car like which blower and supporting mods, how many miles on pump gas, how many miles on E85, how many total miles on the car, how much track time, what kind of tune (remote or dyno)? Do you always test your E85 for ethanol content? Has the car been built for the track and driven hard as such or is it babied?

The reason I ask all these questions is of course because I have a similar setup but I am considering an aluminator swap and if I decide it's necessary I want to do it while my stock motor still has a lot of value. If I can avoid spending the cash I would like to leave it as is but if I wait too long and have the same problem then I have to buy the aluminator anyways with no offset of cost from my stock motor. Thanks for any info you can provide.

Curious as to what shop and how much if you don't mind me asking.

I like the light weight Oliver rods since they weigh less than H-beams or I-beams from Manley. if you stick e85 11:1 should still be fine with a nice 2618 alloy piston and still support 9-15lbs of boost.. real nice total seal rings that maybe are a little thinner for better sealing? .7 or .8mm on the top? I would make sure to clearance the pistons for the oil jets if you have those, keep em.

I agree with sspstangbanger that you must sleeve it because its a known weak link just like the oil pump gears. The front sprockets also seem bad now? and of course new chains and tensioners.

Sleeve to 5.2L with the thicker ones like he did or mmr type. you get more head flow also and it will be ready for huge boost later up to 20psi with 11:1 and good e85 or e98.

Let us know what you decide on.

Did you ever test the e85 at the Valero? The one here consistently tests at e70, where as heb Is usually 80-85. If your tune was done on Valero e70 and u added heb e85, may be your problem. What rpm did you shift at the track?

Short block depends on power level you are shooting for. 900+ do sleeves for sure

Watt Bigham @ Watt's Shop in Lavon just outside Rockwall

He is very good.

He is buddies with my local machine shop I use Joe@G&G performance engines.

Watt sleeved it and Joe did the rest.

Watt can do it all as well and do a great job. He does stuff for a lot of performance shops in DFW area.

He is a dealer for Darton and has these sleeves built for him they are near billet quality material and @ std bore are .185" thick!

As mentioned a 5.2l with a big bore is nice.
I would have went that way but I already had bought pistons for a FRPP block that got recalled and thus had to sleeve a block.

camron, JPC single turbo with return fuel system. it was a stock bottom end(duh). maybe 1500 miles on the setup e85 and 9 psi the whole time. Ill need to test the fuel, but I got a feeling there may have been water in the tanks at heb. It was tuned on Valero e85 fwiw. I didn't even hear boom is the crazy thing, while I went WOT I never came close to the limiter. And it was my first WOT since topping off with fuel.

As far as my 1000 statement, I don't really want to make that amount of power on a constant basis. Shit at 700 it takes til 3rd to hook on the street. 800-850 is really what I would want to do. 1000hp and a stick just don't match. much less the mt82 lol. Has anyone put a 15 short/long block in an 11-14?

OP, since you are tuned by JPC and also running one of thete kits I would pick aarons or erics brain on maybe a jpc/rgr setup. I know they have had really good luck with those engines/setups.

I wouldn't waste money on a hyper piston 2015 motor. It will interchange with newer oil cooler installed.
A new block from tasca $950-1,000 and add a boss crank h-beams wiseco pistons and call it a day if you plan to stay 850-less

Slowboy, it was the heb in kyle.

Yea 850 is still a boatload of power, likely go that route. I'm not interested in building my own short block, I would feel much more comfortable picking one up from MMR or Livernois

You are not far from Kotzur and they have built motors for Murillo and Padilla.
I would use a reputable local as if you ever have a issue its close to you to handle it vs the whole shipping nightmare BS

It's up to you just my .02 of experience unfortunately
