What's the best fluid for the tremec tranny and rear differential?

Just checking to see if anyone has any recommendations as far as these maintenance items go. I bought my 2011 GT500 six months ago and it is almost 100% factory stock except has an aftermarket shifter or shift lever (not sure which because I haven't looked under the boot). The transmission never grinds even in low or high rpm 2nd gear shifts so I think whatever the last owner did to the shifter was a quality addition.

I'm coming up on 20,000 miles on the odometer and am thinking maybe a fresh differential and tranny fluid change could be good for the longevity of the car. What does everyone else use on this forum? Is the factory stuff the best? I hear Redline MT is great but not sure what works best on these cars.

My intentions are to keep the car stock and continue using it as a daily driver I plan on keeping forever.

I use AMSOIL Signature Series Synthetic ATF in my 13 GT500. It works awesome, and if you want to eliminate the 2nd gear grind than pick a MGW gen 2 shifter.

Well, short of getting under the car and looking at what shifter is in there, a good hint that its the factory shifter is do the following:

Put shifter in neutral. Jiggle the knob in a 360 degree circle without forcing it into gesr. If its anything over acouple of MM, you likely have the stock shifter. My stick shifter, replaced under warranty once BTW, had over and inch of slop and play. 80% of the issue right there. Id say that the first mod thats mandatory in these cars is an MGW Gen 2 Shifter.

As for fluid, I tried Amsoil and didnt have quite the results others had, and thats after a trans rebuild and MGW. I use Royal Purple Synchromax and she shifts awesome.

Thank you Lexustech48. I really like the look of the MGW shifter and am familiar with it. My only hesitation is that I don't know where I'd have it installed. I work at a Ford dealership but don't know that our techs are familiar with shifter replacements/upgrades. Did you install yours yourself or take it somewhere?

So I'm keeping track and so far have one recommendation apiece for Amsoil and Royal Purple tranny fluid. Does anyone have any thoughts as far as differential fluid is concerned? Does it matter?

Oh, yeah, your trans techs should be able to install it no problem. Im a technician by trade and I had mine done in under an hour taking my time, watching the videos. I of course have the luxury of a lift and full compliment of tools. Your trans techs will be much more able than me as thats all they do.

I called Tremec Tech Support and they recommended Mobil 1 ATF for the trans. It did seem to shift more smoothly after the fluid change.

For the transmission, I've tried Amsoil, but went back to Royal Purple Synchromax. Never tried Mobil 1 but I noticed smoother shifts with the Synchromax, I have a stock shifter.

Not sure on the rear diff... I have stock fluid in there.

Get a quality pump for the transmission. I had a cheaper one the first time I changed it from like Autozone or something and it leaked all over :/

I think I actually used the Amsoil pump (or the one they sell) and it works great.

I have redline heavy shock proof in mine atm, but thats extreme end, street strip heavy duty. However, if your diff isnt set up correctly, no fluid will prevent it from whining after a few hard passes or burnouts.

I have Amsoil 75w-140 Severe Gear on standby after I have car in for recalls and hopefully a new rear gearset.

I'm of the opinion that no matter how well the gears are set up, they're going to make noise after a few passes with sticky tires. I'm on my second set of 3.73s now and they're howling in 6th gear at highway speeds after the first day at the strip. Install was perfect.

just purchased a tremec xl magnum and on the tag it says use ONLY DEXTRON III . and if you buy one of these, I recommend to PLEASE follow their instructions and quit throwing the dice . I do notice that there are many opinions out there from the great internet minds, who know it all, on usage of fluids, but I think the makers of these particular transmissions know what works in the product they build.

Tremec requires the use of an oil that meets Dextron III specs, there are a lot of oils that meet that spec.

If you crawl under a 2013 GT500 and look at the transmission, this is what you will see.

Transmission Label.jpg

If you look in the owners manual you will see this.

The TREMEC 6060 6-speed manual transmission on your Shelby GT500 uses MERCON® V automatic transmission fluid. Make sure that the correct MERCON® V ATF automatic transmission fluid is used as indicated on the label on your transmission.

If the oil you normally use meets these specs, go for it.

We like using Red Line's fluids! D4 ATF for the transmission, 75W140 in the differential according to their application guide.

I am a convert to Redline D4 ATF fluid. Noticable improvement in shift quality and repeatability over the Royal Purple.
