It was my son’s week to be at his mom’s house. While he was there he was playing with Fire works, caught the house on fire and did $36k of damage. My ex wants me to cover half. The rest of the story is I caught him at my place a month earlier playing with smoke bombs. I took it all away and had a long talk with him. Only question is, am i legally responsible? It was an ugly divorce so there is no working with her.

#1: How did you decide to start this thread in this section?

#2: It should be her dime. Does she have insurance?

I've got no worthwhile legal or insurance advice. Speaking from first hand experience, I can say with some degree of certainty your young fella will probably grow out of this about the time the fumes come into view (gas fumes and perfume), if not sooner.

I played with matches WAY too much. Caught some old carpet on fire in the attic when I was 12 that involved fire trucks. "Accidentally" dropped a lit match in a 2 gallon can of gas...

Somehow the house never burned down. Beats me why it didn't.

So.. it's half of her DNA.. and she didn't pay attention to him or parent him, he sets the house on fire, 36k in damage, and she wants you to pay for it? Huh?

It's her child, her home, and her time to parent. It might be half your DNA but no one has a responsibility to pay for her child's mistakes except her when she's the one who's supposed to watch him.

Hell no! I read a lot of MGTOW (men going their own way) stuff and this seems to be the mentality with an overwhelming amount of women. You have to ask yourself the following question: Would she pay if it was your house? I think you already know the answer.

Not your problem OP. And if she trys to come back and say you need to pay half so that your son has a safe place to live, tell her well then he can stay with you until she can fix her house.

How did he get fireworks?! You should respond to her by telling her to kick rocks (and be a better parent).

Smoke damage is incredibly expensive.

Had a kitchen fire a while back, the damage from the smoke was a lot more than the damage from the fire.

oh really? Jesus, no wonder we had a huge security deposit to pay at the last apartment where Tanya roasted her hand, never thought about that.
