Rant about surgeries/health and coming to relize how lucky some of us are....

Looks like I got some more surgery coming up.

A couple weeks ago I noticed a bit of a lump near my pubic area on the right. It was pronounced enough that I even showed my fiancee to make sure I wasn't crazy. It was definitely a bit puffy compared to the left. I had zero pain, so I said mehhhh

Then about a week ago I had a powerful sneeze and WHOLE LEE CRAP did my groin hurt after. I honestly got wooozy and sweaty afterwards a bit. Iced the crap out of it with some ibuprofen. Booked a meeting with my PCP soon as I could. Of course, in his office 2 days later the lump was gone.

He poked and touched as I coughed and couldnt get the lump to come back. At this point I'm only sore a bit. He says I must have suffered a hernia, but it must be very small if not repeatable in the office. Says to call if it pops out again. Of course that night in the shower, it pops out.

This time I was able to pop it back in and pop it back out. Man that felt weird. Definitely gurts a bit. Saw a specialist doctor the following day and within 5 seconds, he says, YUP you got a hernia.

Ended up booking arthroscopic surgery with him after discussing my options.

1. Live with it. Hope it never gets worse and or the pain level stays tolerable. If worst case happens and part of my lower intestine pops through the opening and loses bloodflow, it would need emergency repair. At that point its painful, open surgery

2. Surgery now. Looks like 4 small incisions just under the belly button. Hope to only miss 7-10 days of work. Doctor did mention the smallest possibility of killing a testicle with the surgery somehow cutting off bloodflow to the boys down there. I said, well man you best be careful! I have had a history with sore/sensitive balls and DAMN that would be such a nightmare

**************************

Kind of was super bummed that night. I'm a "healthy" 27YO 5'9 180lbs, but this is my 3rd surgery. I don't play sports or anything crazy. I just work.

Had surgery on my left wrist for recurring tendinitis and 2 years later, on my right shoulder that had some swelling in my rotator cuff last year. 3 Surgeries now in 4-5 years. Kind of bums me out.

Over the past couple days, I've come to realize how truly lucky I really am. With my life in general, and honestly overall good health with my fiancee and myself. People go through so much and endure so much with FAR FAR worse surgeries and disabilities.

Look at the thread about the man's infant son who has eye cancer. How can I get get upset about this small surgery when people have to go through things like that.

Update....

Surgery. It sounds like you’re healthy, but a bit fragile. Hernias only get worse. 7 days out of work sounds excessive.

I had this same surgery 5-6 years ago. I had 3 incisions. 1 at my belly button, then 3 inches lower, then another one about 3 inches lower. I had surgery on a Friday and I was trying to only miss a week. I ended up being off 2.

After a couple weeks there was only slight discomfort like you expect from any surgery. I don't notice anything at all now.

Ive had surgery on the left and the right, about three years apart. The first one I let go for years and lifted heavy weights. I could feel it start to tear sometimes and the aching feeling in the groin sometimes was bad. Eventually I had trouble walking and finally went to the doctor and was operated on the next day.

When the second really started to show I didn't let it get too out of hand before getting it operated on. They only get worse, never better. Both surgeries entailed an incision in the groin area and a surgical mesh was applied.

The first surgery I threw up on the anesthesia when I got home which caused a tear. I bled quite a bit internally and swelled up in that area. It took me a little over three weeks to get back to almost normal activities.

The second surgery was much smoother. I was up walking the second day, went on a run the third day and was back to work the fourth day. Don't let it go for too long

You're at the age now where you're going to heal the most quickly. The older you get, the longer it takes, the more time full recovery will require. And if you have to go the emergency route because something important pops out, you'll wish you had just got it fixed, now. My vote is: get it done now.

It sucks you have to go through this, yes. The good news is that it is something that can be fixed, and pretty soon after it will just have been a minor speed bump in your life.

Get the surgery. I had laparoscopic done in my early thirties after too much powerlifting. Felt like electric bolts shooting from my lower abs down to my calf. I have a mesh over the break. The pain following the surgery was tolerable. Three scars. I was walking around hunched over the first couple days. The swelling took over a month to subside. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of trying to resume normal exercise workouts much too soon and kept aggravating it over the next several months. It wasn't until a year later that I felt 100% again. No problems since and it's been over 20 years.

Old insurance expires 12/1...

Surgery booked for 11/30 ;)

I wish i was more durable... I really do.

I try to deal with the pain, and it just gets to be too much. I've gone to the gym in sessions years back and both times have resulted in needing surgery. My body deals with inflammation really poorly

I definitely don't lift heavy by any means of the word. Could also be repetitive motion from work

For my wrist and shoulder it was a series of cortisone shots before those stopped working and then needing the operation.

I had the same thing about three years ago except on the left side. Went to the doctor and he knew right away it was a hernia. I had the regular open surgery with the mesh and it was not as bad as everyone said it would be. I was walking around that evening and after a few days I was almost back to normal. I was out of work for two weeks but could have gone back sooner. I was on light duty for about six weeks because I do a lot of heavy lifting at work.

Back in March, I had double inguinal hernias (both sides) and one in my abdomen. I'm 27 and was in excellent health. I actually got them when I was demoing my kitchen. It didn't hurt at all, but I noticed the lump which sounded exactly like your situation.

I had surgery a few weeks later and the doctor put mesh in both sides. My abdomen he was able to sew up without needing mesh. I was back at work after about 11-12 days (I work with computers). I couldn't lift anything over 10 lbs for 10 weeks though. I was able to return to exercising after 12 weeks. But I re-injured the area several months later in the gym on the rowing machine. I've been out of the gym now for another 2-3 months trying to let it heal again. Doctor said I didn't bust the mesh, but I was in quite a bit of pain. When you get the surgery, take it veryyyy easy. It is extremely easy to re-injure and takes about 9 months to fully reseal. It never heals like new though. Its weak forever. If you need any details, feel free to message me. I can probably offer good advice because I just lived this recently. Its a huge pain in the ass.

So... Almost a medical excuse to be semi somewhat lazy with the lifting at work haha.

Masturbation should be avoided too.
But if you wait a few days and then do it, the feeling is indescribable. No lie. Also, your bowels will be messed up for a few days but once you take that first dump post-op, you'd swear to God that there is no better time in your life.

Having had two hernia surgeries 7-10 days is normal. The soreness in my abdomen afterwards made standing for long periods or walking around very painful. Laughing, coughing, sneezing, all of them were near tear inducing.

I've had 1 inguinal and 1 umbilical. I've also had a l4/l5 discectomy, so i feel your pain op on the numerous surgeries at a young age. I was 25, 26, 31.

He likely gave you a prescription for some pain killers. After it runs out here is what I did: I went on a regular program of Aleve and Advil for the next several weeks and it helped a lot.

I've got an inguinal on the right, glad I saw this tread. I'm getting surgery early next year. Should I get open or laparoscopic?

When you guys say "open" do you mean the old-fashioned way where they go inside and actually stitch together the break instead of using a mesh like they do for laparoscopic?

My understanding.... I can advise after my post op appointment, is it's just an entry type for the mesh.

Result the same, the cut and scars are different.

I'm pretty sure I'm 50/50
