Fuel pump question?

I have an 08 GT500 with the following mods: 2.6 upper pulley, 15% lower pulley, 65mm TB, ported M122 and inlet, 56lb injectors, JLT cold air intake, 14 intercooler, long tube headers, hi flow catted xpipe, and magnaflo axle back.

I just added the lower pulley, TB, and ported SC. After I drove it and data logged, finding my fuel pump is maxed out without even getting on it hard.

I am looking at my options: BAP or swapping out pumps in the tank. Can anyone tell me what the factory pumps are rated at?

I have to do something before driving it anymore but this is a budget build and am looking for the best value.

How much boost and what is your maximum Load?
I have recent experience with this topic. I've never liked the idea of a BAP and planned on replacing the pumps. But further research yielded an unbelievable fact. Only one company came up with a true, high volume bolt-on replacement, BUT I also read about issues with reliability of these pumps. The only other way to increase volume without a BAP is to go with a return system. So, I decided to go the BAP route. The two primary contenders are KB and JMS. Here are some facts about both. You make your own decision...>>

KB
Offers a 17 and a 21-volt dual pump BAP.
It is turned on via a Hobbs switch. You can choose the boost level at which to activate.
Basically, these units are either off or on.

JMS
Offers one unit that is programmable, via built-in DIP switches.
Choose between 18 and 22 volts.
Choose to activate it by 1) Grounding it, 2) Hobbs switch, 3) 0-5 volt trigger, i.e. MAF or MAP.
Voltage can be ramped up upon activation, 1) 0.4 v, 2) 0.8 v, or 3) 1.2v. (and ramped down also.) Doing this prevents fuel pressure spikes.

Pricing between these is comparable.
Guess which I chose?

According to the literature I received in my SCT tuning class, the stock GT500 pumps are good for 600 rwhp. With a BAP, 850 rwhp... AND NO TUNING IS REQUIRED..

I had good luck with a VMP BAP for about 3 years. It’s definitely the most economical way to do it, and VMP’s unit is an extremely easy PnP install. I’ve since moved on to a full return style system since some further modding put me over the edge of what stock pumps and a BAP can handle.

Good information and I have been leaning toward replacing the pumps in the fuel hat with 265 or 340 pumps. Not sure what my boost is exactly but on my test drive the factory guage would hit 15 psi. Maybe I will get lucky and someone will be upgrading and have a used BAP at a good price.

There is also VMP which I am running in my 08. Af far as I can tell they are not user programmable but I have been happy with them at 704 rwhp.

I am looking into the VMP now. Thanks

Ahhh yes, forgot about VMP. Probably because I've never done business with them, doh.... Anyways, the VMP unit is a 100 percent ON. It supplies full voltage to the pumps from the time you crack the key... but it is the cheapest..

And if you decide to go with pump replacement, tuning IS required, and it involves many steps, including a remote tuning session.... unless you tune yourself, of course. I know the method and it sucks!

If you decide on a BAP, there's no "right" choice. All brands and methods are good. It's just a matter of personal preference.... blonde, brunette or the 100 percent always ON redhead...!

I don't think anyone uses the hobbs switch on the KB. It's wired direct and the tune compensates.

I went the route of replacement pumps. I’m running 2 of aeromotives 325 pumps in the stock fuel hat. They have been in my car almost 3 years now and have around 25-30k miles driven with them. I haven’t done any logs with them since the original install, but at the time I had room to grow with them and the 72lb injectors I’m running. I have a set of id1000’s I’m waiting to install and will continue to use the same fuel pumps as I have had no issues with them.

Whats your HP with the aeromotive 325? What's involved on the installation?

I think I am leaning toward replacing the pumps unless I find a deal on a BAP.

So I found a good deal on the DeatschWerks kit with 340 LPH pumps and went and ordered it. I will let everyone know how it turns out. Thanks for all the advice.

I'm curious how these pumps perform...

So now you will have to modify your fuel pump voltage table. I have a written procedure, including datalogging... hit me up if you need this info... but most tuners should know how to go about this...

At this point I’m not sure. Car made 630 with the stock tvs pulley. I’ve since changed to a bps 2.398 and a lethal x pipe. Not wanting to sound like “dyno racer”, but best estimate would be 650-675 to the wheels. No track times to back anything up as my second pass late last season I lost my clutch. Next track session I’ll have long tubes and matching off road h pipe and a handful of other things done.

Installation is very simple. I ordered 2 aeromotive pumps from amazon. Pumped arrived and had no pig tails. Called aeromotive and they sent me 2 pig tails free of charge. Removed stock hat/pumps. Removed stock pumps from hat. Installed new pumps in their place. Cut factory pig tails off and spliced in new aremotive pig tails. I do remember having to trim some plastic from near the top of the pump as it was hitting something. Nothing major, just used a sharp pair of dykes to trim it. Memory is a little foggy but I don’t believe I spent maybe a little over an hour in the whole process.

Vmp had done the tune for me at the time. 2-3 datalogs later and I’m where I’m at now.

I wish I was able to tune for myself. For now I am using Tunes for Life from BAMA. I have a few more things I want to do to my car and once I have everything done I hope to take it to Pro Dyno and have them do some magic.
