I can't help anyone that speaks Spanish. Not that I'm prejudiced, I just don't know what you are saying.

The same goes for some rednecks and Northerners. A few of you guys speak a language all your own.

Then there is New Orleans. I have actually heard people speak like Farmer Fran from the Water Boy.

I just do what my dog does. I tilt my head sideways and sit speechless.

About 89 percent of Hialeah's residents speak Spanish as their first or second language and have the largest Hispanic population in the United States.

My wife and I drove through a town in south western California back in 2003 and I remember stopping at a drive-through restaurant to get some directions. Nobody working there spoke English; only Japanese. They didn't understand, nor speak, any English. I was shocked. So this English language issue, or lack thereof, is an issue of not requiring immigrants to learn the English language. Teddy had it spot on right back in 1907!

Theodore Roosevelt’s ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.

“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American … There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag … We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language … and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”

Weird how that doesnt work the other way around. Forced to speak Spanish.

There's a side of my town if you don't speak Spanish, you will NOT get served. They do not want/ will not learn English. If you speak English to them at certain restaurants, they will just ignore you.

I still question what happened before the filming started, as I do with every "going viral" video. Perhaps the worker doesn't speak/understand English, but I don't believe that being she was fired. Perhaps the customer pulled up, was greeted in Spanish, and said something insulting. At that point the worker thought, "**** this, I'm not speaking English with her, I'm playing stupid."

A privately owned business, that's fine.

A privately owned business, that's fine.

The majority of privately owned businesses will do everything in their power to help non-english speakers purchase goods or services. They are in the business to make money, they don’t care what language you speak as long as you pay. Hence the press 2 for Spanish ok virtually every customer service line.
Also, according to the article it states she no longer works there. Fired or quit one or the other.

...but this goes back to the gay cake issue where SVTP seemed to side with the baker, meaning someone shouldn't have to do something they don't want.

Some mom and pop mexican place...it's their call. They could possibly make more money if they had people working the counter, but perhaps maybe also more problems. Some whiny white girl complaining her tacos are not the way the likes...GTFO, that old mexican lady has made them the same for 30 years, she's not changing for you.

But we're sort of talking apples to oranges. You're talking phone lines, like some local bank that services 50K customers, has 3 brand locations, a staff of 100+ and a phone line. I'm talking a mexican grocery store that has a restaurant inside as well. If you can't figure out the basics to eat/shop there, that's your problem. I've been to like 25 countries and never had a problem not speaking the native language.

Also, according to the article it states she no longer works there. Fired or quit one or the other.

Yes, which goes back to what I said. I wouldn't be surprised if somehow the customer pissed off the cashier before she started filming. I fully believe she knows at least basic English, but didn't want to use it.

Firing the employee doesn't resolve the issue of immigrants NOT being required to learn the English language. It's like a non-issue to a lot of people. This is the United States of America where the official language is English! ALL immigrants should be required to learn the language. It should absolutely be a requirement to reside in this country for anything longer than 90 days. If you fail to abide, you are deported. JMO.

The same goes for some rednecks and Northerners. A few of you guys speak a language all your own.

Here's a simple way of determining where a Northerner is from:

1) Are they angry?
If Yes - Likely New England, excluding Maine

2) If they drop the f-bomb, does is end with "ACK" or "OCK?"
  • ACK = Boston
  • OCK = NY
3) Does everything they say end with an upward inflection, like a question?
If Yes - Great Lakes Region

4) Do they seem like a lost Canadian?
Maine. Definitely Maine.

5) Can they drive decently?
If no, most likely Rhode Island

6) If you yell out "screw the Red Sox," do they throw a glass bottle at you?
Yes - Masshole / NE CT
No - NY / SW CT

7) If you yell out "STOP. THIS IS THE SANDWICH POLICE!"
If they drop everything and lay on the ground, definitely Cape area

8) If they face is planted firmly on DeBlasio's ass:
Definitely a New Yoh'kah
