Tire Recommendations?

Not sure if this is the right place in the forum to post this...if not please feel free to move it!

My 2011 Shelby has the original stock tires on her, currently sitting at about 10.6k miles. I drive the car maybe 50 miles a week, strictly for enjoyment although I do enjoy getting on the throttle while we are out playing around. There is no dry rot on the tires but I cannot get any traction at all with these things, even with TC on.

I would like to upgrade/replace these tires in the near future within the next 1-2k miles and just want to set my goal on a tire that you all think fits what I am looking for. Looks nice, performs better just for a weekend street vehicle.

Any suggestions so I can start setting money aside?

I recently switched to Firestone Firehawk Indy 500, it's a highly rated extreme performance summer tire. Great buy for the money, a fraction of the MPSS price.

Thanks for the recommendations all! Looks like these would be the pricing from tire rack for all 4 tires (255/40R19 in front and 285/35R19 in back):

1) MPSS $1,116
2) Firestone FH Indy 500 $814
3) Continental E.C. $926

I am impressed with the Firestone FH Indy 500 price and reviews...is this a tire you think would be okay year around here in Arizona? I know it says its a Summer Performance tire, but with temps only dropping to the 40's-50's a few months of the year is that really even something I should be concerned with?

look up the toyo 888, seems to be a best grip tire and will be my next set. I have run nitto 555 and nt01, drove on continentals(good grip but wore quick) and drove on Pilots(also wore quick). since you are in a year round summer it will be fine. Tire disclaimers say not to drive below 45 deg. all that happens is it hardens up the rubber a little and the grip will be less. if you are unaware of that you can wreck a car or spin out from that(i have seen it). I watched a viper ACR get some light throttle wheel spin, driver didnt know it and didnt correct the steering so he spun out into a light pole. thats an example of his checkbook writing a bigger check than his talent allowed. It was a shame to see it happen. I told that owner earlier in the year to do a Porsche club DE day so he would know what that car was capable of and he didnt. Sorry for the rant, look into the toyos, there may even be a few videos on youtube for comparisons

I always liked the Continental Extreme Contact line, but I believe they replaced it with a different line (ProContact?) last year. Low inventory, pricy and very hard to get when I looked.

I've been happy with the Nitto 555G2 in AZ on the street. Good longevity/wear so far. Grip is OK for a street tire...but you typically trade grip for wear or vice-versa. Price was reasonable.

Absolutely no concern, the Indy 500 is the best riding tire I've ever had on my Cobra. Sure it's not gonna hook like my M/T ET Street DR's, but it's grippy, great handling zero road noise and excellent comfort. OP it'll be night and day difference over your stockers...

If $$ don’t matter too much and grip is key, MPSS cup 2s are amazingly sticky once exercised a bit. I have actually been able to do full throttle runs in first gear on a hot cement surface, and I did a few track day events and saw 1.07 Gs.

The seem to ride pretty well, and don’t give up cornering grip like DRs do.

In the colder temps they aren’t much good, but they don’t break traction as unexpectedly/dangerously as the stock Goodyears do.

They are pricey as hell, and as an alternative, the Toyo R888s might be a slightly cheaper, but comparable tire.

I have well over 600WHP. Probably closer to 700WHP than 600WHP, and my MPSS tires hook up just fine for fun street acceleration.

The Cup 2 tire doesn't come in the stock GT500 size for the front.

OP, the Michelin Pilot Super Sport is an excellent tire for the GT500. It's being phased out, though, and replaced with the Pilot Sport 4S. The Continental ExtremeContact is also a great tire, but it's very sensitive to tire pressure. It doesn't grip as well as the MPSS, but is definitely acceptable. I've heard good things about the new Continental Extreme Sport, too. When the time comes again, I'll weigh replacing my MPSS with either the new PS4S or the Extreme Sport.

I didn't have the same experience with MPSS....wouldn't hook for me at around 650.

I replaced my factory tires with Nitto 555 Gen 2. Night and day difference. I highly recommend them. I went 285/35R19 on all four. Looks better that way

My car doesn't have crazy HP & TQ but it is putting down 620 HP 630 TQ to the wheels.

I can't thank you all enough for your help here! I am 100% mainly concerned with traction compared to anything else. With how little I drive the car wear slash mileage is not a concern, even if I only got 12k miles out of a set it'll probably take me 2-3 years to get there. Just want to make sure when I give it some gas I don't need to worry about losing the rear end, because with these stock tires that's already a reality.

How come no one with the OE 19's or 18's go with the same size tire all around?

You know 285/40R18 or 285/35R19

So you can do a partial rotation & not have to worry about not finding a match 255 tire.....

OR for the OE 19's up-size>>
Front 285/35R19
Rear 295/35R19

I'm like you, don't put many miles on my car and was looking for a tire that can harness the power in a straight line. I went with the Nitto 555R drag radial and it's working out well for me. If I was looking for a more all around tire I'd go with Cool Cobra's recommendation.

I just (2weeks ago) bought four 255/40/19 MPSS for $848 delivered to my door from Discount Tire. I realize OP wants 285s in back but there’s no way 285s are $130 more per tire, right?

MPSS are being discontinued though and I know the replacement model is $30-50 more per tire. Maybe that’s it.

I'm currently at a little over 700RWHP with my car and running the Michelin Pilot super sports. I have a pretty good suspension setup but these tires stick very well for me with warmer temps and good road surfaces. They are pricy but ride quality is good, no road noise, excellent in the rain, and I have a little over 10,000 miles on them and they have a lot of life left. I don't go out of my way to abuse them but they have definitely been ran hard and I can't imagine how many sets of drag radials I would be on by now.

You guys running over 600rwhp can stick MPSS from a dig? I’ve got a well set up drag suspension and I wasn’t too happy with them around 650 at the tires.

Roll racing I have no doubt they’d be fine.
