Yet another cam question JDM SS vs. BPS

I have my build all laid out with exception of cam. This has been the most frustrating aspect and the most vulnerable to **** up. I am doing springs and retainers so no need for NSR. JDM SS and BPS seem to be the most well received for street strip. Neither provide any specs so I cannot compare them objectively.

From what I can tell, JDM follows a high lift philosophy, which can be hard on the valve train.

The BPS street version appears to have less lift and does a good job of adding power across the powerband.

Anyone have recommendations either way? I am leaning toward the BPS but can be convinced otherwise. Thanks

I had the JDM SS and for a DD in heavy urban traffic, not my preference. I did see +96WHP at the dyno with these and they had a nice chop. On the dyno graph, I started to see gains in the 3k territory and I think I have the profile sheets on file but I'd need to poke around. Don't have any experience with BPS.

JDM cams are the 3v hot rod cams of the GT500 world. Out of those 2 BPS custom grinds.

BPS custom spec bullet racing cams is what I’m leaning towards the ones I’m looking at say NSR but I’m upgrading springs and everything else regardless.

I have JDM SS cams for about 2yrs. I think street manners and low end are great. My car is an auto.

Gotta give me more than that. These are NOT similar to Ford Racing mild compromised designs. They were developed and tested in NHRA Super Stock and ran in the fastest NHRA TVS Cobra Jets. I'd actually say you can make better street choices. For full power, less street--the JDM SS was my choice and I'm happy.
BPS didn't sell cams when I bought.
Honestly I'd never buy cams without talking to the shop. BPS and JDM are some of my favorite shops who I personally buy from. Can't go wrong either way but I'd talk to Sylvain if you're serious about BPS.

Agreed on all points. Look at the dyno sheets, JDM SS cams have nothing in common with those FR hot rod cams. That said, bimini is correct, there are better choices for the street. Driveability takes a hit, especially when they're paired with an aftermarket clutch.

I never said they are similarly specd cams lmao. After all we are talking about 2 totally different head designs. I am referring to people buying them for sound/popularity and the majority of the combos they are put in don't run as well as the could. The lift is also overkill and could create problems down the road in cars that actually see miles. The CJ reference holds no weight unless you are spinning the shit out of a 4.0+ liter blower and shifting at ~8000. Obviously that is not the case for most GT500s.

Talked to BPS guys before I pulled trigger. They are 100%. They know JDM well and were able to compare and contrast without talking shit. The JDM SS seem like a very good choice for many, just not for me.

Klaus BPS guys are great.
I ran BPS cams for 3 1/2 yrs....08 gt500
In the 1/4 mile they were awesome
That's where they perform the best.
Had approx 40k miles when installed
Had 60k when I ,,,,,Ed up!!!!!!

Street...... great idle/sound
Uses lots of fuel fo feed them
Which burnt out my left magnaflow cat / twice
Plugs should be checked often,
Found drive ability was good , but aftermarket clutch can be frustrating. DD'd for awhile, not the best fun

In June I blew piston/rings
Engine is being rebuilt,
All my fault, took 1 mistake to screw up,
Anyways, BPS CAMS were right for me
On a conservative tune, ran high 10s

I originally just wanted the sound, which is great
Once racing, u new there was lots of power....
Goog Luck

You do bring up a good point about the lift creating problems down the road. Anyone here who’s put some miles on their JDM cams?

I just bought a JDM aluminum short block and a 4.0 Whipple and big fuel system and it'll have a ARH long tubes etc etc. I'd love to put cams in now. Are you guys passing emissions with these cams? I'm in RI Thanks

Emissions not even in my thought process. Get an exception for the state. Low mile, collectible vehicle, etc
Stock cams will be a huge restriction in a built 5.8/big Whipple combo, and I mean 100hp restriction.
Buying horsepower is easy this days, but it still takes the combo to make it reach potential.

Sure I understand, I just want to make the most of the combination and still have an emission legal tune. If I have to give up some HP then i will have to.

Just need to pass visual check?
Nobody sees a cam but everyone hears them.
Mines not too bad through stock mufflers.

Unfortunately its a plug in. ( i got by with out cats last time ) My tuner said just don't go too big of a cam and we will get it thru. I should have mentioned it's an 07. We put 13-14 cams in my brother's Mach 1 (D1SC) and it worked well. I'm hoping someone has had this before and could recommend , thanks in advance.

I've always liked the '13-14 cams from experience.
Also would expect you could find a work around on that inspection.

I’m pretty sure emissions tests are fairly strict up in NJ. I’d give the guys at JDM a call and ask how you could pass a plug in inspection with these cams, I’m sure they have a way around it.

We only have a visual inspection around here, and most shops don’t even bother with it.
