Replaced the fox this weekend with a new-to-me project. I took a right turn at Albuquerque as this is out my norm.

I've been coming down with a Cold/Flu since Thursday afternoon so i've had a lot of browsing time on craigslist/FB marketplace. I told the old man I was in the market, so he was thoroughly browsing as well. Turns out not so many folks sell cars around the holidays, and they don't sell very many projects either.

But this popped up Saturday morning as a new post, went to look at it saturday afternoon, brought it home Sunday.

It's a true 64.5' Coupe 289 C4. Not numbers matching (I don't care). Very solid car. Needs a front drivers floor pan, some patch work on the outer door skins, minor patches here and there, but otherwise it's rock solid. Very hard to find this clean/solid. Even the normally rotted out cowl panels are perfect. It was restored by a father/son about 20 years ago, then the son took it with him, moved it around, let it sit for 8 years, and his wife made him give it the boot.

I bought it as it sits, but I have every nut bolt washer and hardware in bags tagged with locations. Basically I have the entire car in a bag/box. It also included a brand new summit full disc brake conversion with power brake BNIB. And it runs.

Not sure what my plans are for the car yet. Taking suggestions. I could trash the 289/c4 combo, throw in something modern, and roll on. Or throw a T5 behind the 289, cam/intake/headers to wake it up, and get it going. It's really a blank canvas.

Always a great project. That will keep you occupied for a while.

that is going to take...a lot of time and A LOT of money....I'd keep the 289, throw some AFR 165's on it, decent cam and a T5
and who is this "old man" you speak of?

Nice choice. I just got done replacing my drivers floor panel on my 1968 coup. I look forward to seeing this car’s progress.

I agree with using the 289 if it's really in good shape internally. Depends on your budget, of course. Updating the engine alone is a fair expense. Edelbrock manifold, Holley 4-barrel, headers, mild cam, ignition upgrade and the engine hopefully will serve your needs for years to come. Nothing like an original 289 in a 64.5 Mustang IMO.

Ecoboost powertrain swap.

Steering and brake conversion.

Cruiser time.

This would be pretty badass. Lots of guys going to say sacrilege but i think the new crate engine and power pack would be a great way to mix it up for a build.

West Coast No Longer!
A couple of observations. Looks like the generator that is unique to 64 1/2 is present. The heater core is bypassed which usually means the heater core has a leak. It's hard to tell but it looks like it has a two barrel carb. If the engine is all original then it would have to be a 260ci since that was the only 2bbl V8 for that year, the other 2 V8 options were 4bbl 289s.
If it is a 260 the fifth character in the VIN would be an "F". The two 289s were "D" and "K".
Overall it looks like a very good starting place for what could be a very cool car. Good luck!

Papaw treed me.

First of all - congrats on an awesome project! Coupes are close to my heart.

If you want to make it fun to drive and add some power then get a 9” rear that will bolt in and add a traction-lok. Check out street or track.com for suspension and brake upgrades. A T5 is great if you plan on less than 300 to the wheels on street tires.

It all depends on your budget and what you want to do with the car. I’m getting my coupe ready for some road course duty so I’m most of the way thru major upgrades to just about everything. Fuel cell and cage are the 2 big items left. Talk about a slippery slope!

It is a LOT of fun driving vintage iron that can leave coyotes and vettes in the dust, let alone outhandle them. Plus, 100mph in an old car like this feels like 150 in a new one. It’s a much more visceral experience. Good luck and keep us posted!

Well I must say, I'm impressed by some of the knowledge y'all have on the first gen's. This isn't my first rodeo, so I thoroughly looked this one over.

This car is actually D code, meaning 289 4v. However, what's in it based on the intake manifold is a 66 model 289 2v. So what's actually in it, I have no idea. But it does run so there's that.

Definitely will require money, but a huge chunk of parts not pictured are in good shape like the bumpers, lights, valances etc. All things I can reuse and spare myself the expense. Anything that's not in good shape, there's a good chance I won't go OEM or anything I can buy. Meaning, I want to do a lot of custom sheet metal/fabrication work.

In my mind this morning I came up with Cowl hood (like Maier Racing), Dove tail - shelby style, blacked out trim, Painted bumpers, all in Leadfoot grey. With anthracite wheels. Heads/Cam 289, T5, Fitech, Street or Track suspension (the brand), andddd who knows what else. I plan on doing a lot of chassis work as well.

My pops.

And yea, time and money is a given. I'm in no rush though. I thoroughly enjoy building cars.

haha...a grown man asking his father if it's okay to buy a car...lmao

yup...I did the same thing. i was deployed in theater during OIF, and called home from the mwr tent. I had a friend my freshman year of highschool give me a ride in his '87 GT. I BEGGED my mom to let me buy one, and in all her wisdom she said no. Fast forward a decade, I call and we talk...and I asked if she would let me buy a Mustang if I made it home from the war. She paused...for like ten seconds and then said "I guess so.." I was happy! The next day I got a red cross letter. She died that night.

This is probably why I will always own a fox

Those 289’s are surprisingly strong and healthy engines though not powerful. Heads, cam and a 4bbl will for sure wake up the engine as it did for mine with only swapping the 2bbl for a 4bbl. Best thing about these cars is that you’re not short of options. Have fun.
