Some of you have seen in the F150 thread about what I was going through with my 2018 Screw F150 5.0. But to bring everyone up to date, Ford has a TSB out about the 5.0 Coyotes in 2018+ using oil. Mine used so much oil in the first 4k miles, the dipstick was bone dry. The TSB has you check oil useage every 200 miles and record until a quart is used. During the test, mine failed at about 1k miles. 1 whole quart down. Per TSB, that's a new engine. But before you check out, there's more to this.

My old mans best friend is having a motor put in his truck for the same reason. It has 3k miles on it. There are a few other trucks at the dealership there for the same reason.

It's such a large issue that motors are actually on back order, and roughly a month out. But the ironic part is that Ford has yet to state there being any issue with the 5.0 plasmamoly spray in liners. The long block part number has also not changed, meaning they've done zero engineering updates to the design.

So effectively, Ford is replacing 5.0 Coyotes in 2018+ trucks (and possibly mustangs soon from what I can find) with the exact same motors that has the exact same issue. The cab gets to come off, the truck will go back together, and it will not be the same, all for a not complete fix. Very frustrating.

Needless to say, I am asking the dealership to take my 6k mile truck back, get the wife into something cheap and not 40K+ and just move on. I will never buy a new Ford again.

IIRC you said you or someone in your family knew someone in the dealership?

Are the 2019's having the same issue?

Wow, that totally sucks! Replacing an engine that has a known potential issue with the same engine that has the same potential issue makes no sense.

That's not necessarily true.

Based on my experience as a Ford parts guy back in the day, engineering numbers at the end indicated updates.

I suppose they could have changed manufacturing processes to fix it, but despite all of that, they've yet to admit fault/advise customers of what the issue actually is. Dealership doesn't even know. They just replace the motors per the TSB.

Is there a reason that the '17s aren't affected? My wife has a '17 XLT 5.0.

Don't get me wrong. It would have been the smart thing to do to change the part number for tracking purposes, if they made a significant process or design change. But working for a major manufacturing company myself, I'm well aware it doesn't always happen because they don't consider it significant enough to track, or some other nonsense reason. They probably have change levels to parts, and just roll a revision to that instead of a brand new part number.

I'm going through problems with my 15 150 right now too. ABS light came on and found a bunch of burned wires in the fuse box under the hood. It's got 50K miles so no warranty.

Fuse box has never been messed with and is all stock. The harness is getting swapped and moving onto a new Tacoma. I'm going to miss the power of the 3.5 ecoboost but I don't trust the truck anymore. Have no use for a full size truck anyway. Most I tow is two snowmobiles or a side by side.

Thanks for the info, I was unaware of oil issues with ‘18 F150s. Mine has around 2k mi and it’s been around 500 miles I haven’t checked.

Sorry to hear about the oil issues. I was one of the unfortunate people that had the bullshit Focus dual clutch problems. After the way Ford knew prior to putting the crap transmissions in and then treated everyone, I dumped my car and moved away from them as a manufacture. 8 of the last 10 cars have been Fords, and I'll never touch them after it.

Left a real bad taste in my mouth.

It's an interesting problem.

All Coyotes got spray in liner coating starting in 2018 (trucks and mustangs). Its been said the company that did the spay in bores for 2018+ coyotes was a different company than the one that performed the same service on the 13/14 GT500 and GT350s.

The oil burning issue has been found in some mustangs, but not many (yet?). The mustang issues seem to be more focused on engine noises (ticks and rattles...possible piston slap).

A few mustang guys have had their motors replaced for "ticking" only to have the brand new one tick too. LOL.

My car burns 0 oil and is pretty quiet. Maybe im one of the lucky ones, but with the power it's making, i could care less about ticking or oil burning. When it blows apart it'll be because of me, not Ford.

Seems like this all started with the spray in liners? Minus the 5.8?
