For those of you who've made a similar trip, I have some questions.

If you were within driving distance of NYC and wanted to drive up for a 1-2 day visit, where, outside the city would you stay that you can leave your vehicle and get into the city with mass transit?

Wise question! Good luck, enjoy! Went to downtown to drop off a painting at Sotheby's Auction house with the wife. We will never go back.

Secaucus NJ. My cousins from Virginia were up for the 4th of July weekend and stayed 2 nights in a hotel there and it was super cheap getting into NYC by mass transit. Its only about 5-10 minutes from the Lincoln Tunnel into Manhattan.

I have parked on the NJ side and took the water Taxi to the financial district several times. Easy trip, good parking, good views of the city, good view of the Statue of Liberty and drops you in a nice part of town.

I always took the train in and out of NYC for business. Any nearby train station will have plenty of parking available. Be prepared, the whole city smells terrible. You know that dirty feeling you have when you get off a plane after marinading in that fart-tube for several hours? Walking around in NYC is like walking into a Subway restaurant- 15 seconds and you smell like it for the rest of the day.

Yup. I found it easier to park/drive in Jersey then take public or private transport into NYC. Then just walk or take the subway once in the city.

You bunch of Podunks...

NYC is The Center of The Universe...and the GREATEST city on the globe.

OP...The secaucus suggestion above is good if you are coming in on I78, I80 or I95

Also...Water Taxi is the shizznit, as stated above for ease and views of the city...but you first need to decide WHAT exactly you want to see in Manhattan during your couple of days. That will determine best commute in (no need to go all the way downtown, if you want to see Rockefeller Center, etc.)
Taxi's are plentiful (both on the island and off), and the train is the cheapest

Enjoy...and...do yourself a favor...MAKE SURE you do 1 World Trade...it is SO worth it!

I figured the normal shit. Times square, empire, Central Park, 1 world trade.

And I'm coming in on the 95.

And it can stink all it wants. I guarantee it won't hold a candle to the smell in Kuala Lumpur...

Have a bowl of oyster stew in Grand Central (below) at The Oyster Bar
Juniors Cheesecake near Times Square
John's on Bleecker (near Greenwich Village) for the BEST Pizza (One Bite, EVERYBODY knows the Rules!)
Empire State at NIGHT
Top of The Rock during the day

When will you be doing stand-up at the Apollo?

Don't get me wrong, your first time is memorable and usually unforgettable. If you go often, it's almost like spending a week there one afternoon because smart people lose the tourist mindset and turn into more of the survival of the fittest ideals. Of course it has interesting places to see but IMO a lot of what people think about the city tends to be overrated.
