Soooo

Was going to close out a deal today on a new car, but the dealer called me up and said they had been robbed. Someone stole the wheels off a dozen cars and stuck them on blocks.

One of the cars hit was the car I wanted.

I'm kinda like, WTF now.

Obviously they'll get replacements on and inspect for damage, Yada Yada... But, still, it's like finding your prom date isn't a virgin and you've been trying to go all the way for 3 months.

Should they knock some bucks off? How much?

Will this show up on a VIN report?

It will not show on a ViN report because this was not a traffic collision. These things happen all the time, which is very unfortunate. The car you wanted is the same car you wanted before this happened. The dealer will put new wheels on and all should be good. I wouldn’t let this deter me from a car I wanted.

I would try to work out a deal with them. As long as everything checks out I don't see why this would effect your decision at all.

Id want it on a lift and inspect the undercar for myself. you want to look at the frame/pinchelds (if unibody) and inspect the brake baking plates, rotors and lower control arms front and rear.

Anything damaged needs to be fixed with new OEM parts.

Then beat them over a barrel for a better deal.

I would go look at it first. Look at the floor pans, rocker panels, brake rotors, bumpers. These are common areas I see damaged when I get wheel theft related repairs through the shop I’m at.

I’m not saying I wouldn’t still buy the car but the damage could sway me otherwise.

Something tells me that fly-by-night wheel thieves aren't centering their padded jack points on the pinch weld area of a frame.

Find some cosmetic damage and negotiate the price.

Side note: Sometimes PDs put out "target cars" that are monitored and nab those damn thieves. I'd contact your local PD and see if they can do something like that to try to catch the lowlives.

Would definitely use this as leverage to score an even better deal. Unless I received a nice discount, I would avoid a molested car.

+ 1 billion! It's not like they drove the car OP, maybe you can get a rim upgrade as well?

Many moons ago when I was in the car business my boss drove his new demo across the street to buy some Cheetos and a Pepsi at the Quickmart. Ten minutes later he calls me and says, “HOSS, SOMEBODY STOLE MY DEMO!! CALL THE COPS!!”

That ding dong had left his demo running in front of the gas pumps at our sketchy intersection while he ran in, and someone made off with it. I called OnStar so they could activate it and the highway patrol found him and chased the guy down the expressway. They put out stop strips ahead of him to blow his tires out and he kept going. The local TV station filmed the whole thing live from the helicopter, sparks flying from all four chrome rims as the thief is still headed down the expressway at 60+ MPH. They finally got him stopped and we got the vehicle back.

We put new factory chrome wheels and tires on it, and sold it the next week, fully disclosing the vehicle theft on the disclosure statement.

They actually have to be more crafty and slick when taking 12 sets of rims in a one night boost, you can't have 12 alarms going off all at once. I bet they were cleaner then you think.

I bet it was an inside job seeing all cars come with wheel locks

Thieves usually bust out a window and take the lock then use it on all the other vehicles. Thats what happened at my dealership. Or they just hammer a socket on it til it grips then zip it off.

This has happened so many times I don't understand why they don't sell 20.00 locking lug nuts for 100.00 on each and every car.

While I totally agree with you but boosting 12 cars on an open lot would be impossible to smash windows or even jack a car up with today's tech without getting pinched quick also with burning lugs off. One car? Sure, 12 NO FREAKING WAY. Those guy's asses would be hanging out to dry.
