Wife wants a smartwatch for her Bday. I know nothing about em. Who has what? What do you like/don't like? Think she's mainly looking to use it for texts/emails/calendar, etc...

I have an iwatch and Casio Protrek. Both can receive messages, but the iwatch can respond to them without using your phone, and it has Siri. I’d go Apple Watch for the wifey

The operating system of her phone may help guide responses.

My research showed limited options for iOS so I ended up with Apple.

I find it very useful but it’s not going to replace my phone completely, yet.

I was using an Apple Watch (latest version), which I initially liked. I found it convenient when I didn't want to carry my iPhone. But the thrill factor waned pretty quickly for me. The OS was quirky at times and therefore the watch wasn't as reliable as I needed it to be. Sometimes, for example, it wouldn't announce an incoming call. I also didn't like the fact that people around could hear my conversations since people tend to talk louder into the watch than normal. Lastly, the screen face is just too small and not anywhere near as simple to use as a smart phone. So after maybe 3 months of use, mine sits in my closet, where it will stay. My wife, though, loves hers. In part because she is way too attached to it. She even wears it to bed. Bugs the crap out of me when smart devices control our lives to that extent. She's not alone in this. I see way too many people every day spending way too much time talking on their phones, texting, answering calls like every one was very important. So I'm not a fan. Hope your wife likes it.

Shit, sorry guys. She has a Google Pixel. I guess her main reason for wanting it is at work they have to have their phones away, so this would be a way she could still see if somebody is trying to get ahold of her (i.e. our kids school, my mom when she has our kids, etc...)

I've been considering one for awhile, mostly for when I ride the motorcycle. I don't really need it any other time but it would be nice to know if my wife is trying to call me or someone important. Obviously I wouldn't try to answer a call while riding but I would like to be able to know if I need to pull over and call her back or not. Also it would be nice to have the navigation function when riding if I'm trying to get somewhere that I haven't been before.

I got a samsung gear fit 2 which at least has fitness tracking as well (I use it for tracking my heartrate and O2 saturation, steps and workouts).. I got it free with my note 7 or 8, otherwise I wouldn't of bought one.
When the novelty wears off in a month you just look at your phone. Mine will show text, email and other notifications. Responging is difficult. It will even let you answer your phone, though you have to still use your phone to talk/listen. Then you have to charge the watch nightly. Even with very little use you can just get a day or two on battery, especially as they age.

I have a Garmin Vivoactive and use it with an iPhone, they are compatible with Android as well though. Mine is a few years old; I think they are on the Vivoactive 3 now. It will vibrate when you receive a text/call and display the text and who is calling. You can answer the phone from the watch, but you still need to talk through your phone, you can't text back from the watch. It will also sync up to your phone's calendar and show you upcoming events. You can't view emails on the watch. The newer versions may have the ability to text back as I think you can get them with a Verizon plan now, I haven't really researched what they are capable of though.

It is nice to discreetly view a text/who is calling while at work and then decide if I need to get the phone out to respond. I think the discreet part goes out the window if you start tapping and staring at your watch to respond though. I wear it daily but my main reason is for fitness tracking during the day (steps) and recording cycling/running workouts (it will sync to heart rate, speed, and cadence sensors if you need/want that).

I haven't worn a watch in years and got an Apple Watch last month as a birthday gift.

I'll admit I like it a lot more than I thought I would. It's much easier to see a text (and reply if desired), create/see/dismiss an alarm / reminder, change songs when playing or streaming music, pay for something if the card reader supports it, get the weather, see when I'm getting a call, and identify who's calling. Although I can make and receive calls with the watch, I don't unless I'm wearing ear buds (that combo makes placing calls really convenient).

Although I can read personal emails on the watch, the company I work for uses the Blackberry app and I only get an email notifications from them. I have to use my phone to read or reply and 'm completely okay with that. Their meeting reminders show the name and time of the meeting, which keeps me from having to go to my phone to get that info.

One of the first days wearing it, I received an alert about an elevated heart rate while resting. My first reaction was that the watch was AFU. I thought about it and over the last 10 minutes I had been looking for a document that I created the prior day and couldn't find. The rework would take two full days and I was understandably getting stressed about it. Apparently more than I thought.

I have a Pixel 3 paired with Samsung S3.

Smart watches aren't for everyone. Personally, I can agree that talking through the watch is dumb. I think I've done it one time, and that was because I was on the roof of the house and I was wearing my working gloves.

Outside of that, it's nice to get notifications on my wrist so I know if I want to grab my phone from my pocket.

My wife and I both rock Apply Watches. We do have Iphones so they pair. I have the cell service for when we go bike riding etc etc. It's amazing all the stuff a smart watch can do. It is frowned upon to have your phone out where I work. I just hit a button and send a voice text to my phone when needed.

Yep my Apple Watch is not worn all the time either. I am sure I could find better use for it. I do like wearing it to the gym to keep track of cardio etc. I noticed my heart rate goes up to close to 160 doing heavy dumbell curls and walking them back to the rack. So anyone saying weightlifting is not cardio is not correct. I probably burn more calories lifting weights for 45mins - 1 hour than 30 minutes on the stair master.

I got my wife her first iPhone in 2009. She reluctantly accepted it but aked me a few times why did I get it the flip phone was fine and she hated the smart phone. Now you have to surgically remove her from her iPhone XR. She is on the thing constantly and does stuff with it I did not even think was possible lol!

Not the same as steady state cardio. Sure you can get your heart rate up, I know I do, but don’t fool yourself into thinking it’s cardio, so you don’t need to work in cardio days.

Yes I agree. I absolutely do cardio every time I am in the gym. I was just surprised how weightlifting gets my heart rate going. I also workout superset style sometimes with no rest between sets. I might bench press, move straight to lat pull downs, then do sit ups and leg raises before going back to another set of bench press / lat pull downs. Weightlifting burns more calories in the long run compared to cardio alone if lean body mass is increased as a result. But for cardiovascular health cardio is best you are right.

I get my heart rate higher on heavier lifts, especially deads, it will hit 180 briefly. I agree that weight lifting will ultimately burn more cals, especially as you add muscle mass, so long as diet is on point. I don’t go as hard at cardio as I used to, it’s counter productive in the weight room and can fatigue muscles, making you susceptible to more tears, pulls etc. I still get in 3 or sometimes 4 runs a week.

Depends on what you want it for. I do track exercise with mine, but the main reason I wanted it was so I did not have to carry the cell phone with me when I go on a hike. It is fine for a quick text or an urgent phone call, and that's really what I want it for.
