You can buy a new Ram 1500 Classic for quite a bit cheaper than the new model Ram. It’s the older body style though. Apparently, Ram is going to make the old body style for another year, making it a two year run after introducing the latest body style. You might look into that option.

I also would recommend a 2009/2010 F150 with the 5.4v 3v. They had the upgraded phasers and also got the 6speed auto.

all the reading i've done about the 3v cam phaser issue ive never seen a clearly defined cut off date. What about the 2009/2010 makes them less susceptible?

I'm considering adding a truck to the stable as my DD. Problem is, I've never owned a truck before and have never really considered one, so I feel a bit blind. I know SVTP is a bit biased towards Fords (for obvious reasons), but I'd like to get opinions as I've seen many members with trucks.

I'm looking to keep the purchase sub $30k. Some requirements I have:
  • While I have no immediate need to tow, I'd like to keep the option open to tow a boat (no bigger than 24')
  • I've got a kid on the way, so 4 door is a must
  • Decent MPG. I don't drive a lot, but would like to not get 10 MPG

At this time, the front runner seems to be a 2015-2017 F150 3.5 Ecoboost. All my research shows that it ticks all the right boxes. Anything else I should be cross shopping? Or anything I should look for or consider with F150s?

RAM will give you the most for your money trim/options wise.
Tundra will probably be the most reliable and longest lasting
Chevy is somewhere in between as far as bang for the buck
F-150 will you have the fastest truck but you will pay top dollar

dont kid yourself about the 3.5L ecoboost. It doesn't get any better mpg than a v8 truck and possibly worst with load. This myth needs to be taken behind the barn, shot execution style and buried. They are peppy though

I just went through this exact search. I looked at F150s, Silverados, and Rams. The Ram felt definitely the nicest out of the ones that I drove. I pulled the trigger on a new Laramie last week. It is the best looking truck out of the 3 in my opinion. I looked at Raptors which were in my price range, but ultimately decided it wasn't for me. I wanted a good luxury truck DD and the 5.7L Ram engine is bulletproof.

I got it full optioned out. 64k MSRP, got it for about 10k off MSRP out the door. A good deal, not a great deal. I've seen people get 12-14k off MSRP if the timing is right. I just needed it now and couldn't wait until later in the year. View attachment 1591479
So is 395 and 410 the biggest engine for the 1500?

That is with every single safety parameter, turned off and boost turned way past what stock turbo can handle. Just do a quick search online, many blown up motors. Had to say this bc those videos shouldn't be allowed to be posted.

carry on.

I think GM is doing this too. Because the 2019’s only have a face a mother could love. There design team should be fired. 18’s look way better than the 19’s.

Have they had a lot of issues with it?

In cold weather they usually won’t inflate. Massive info on it.

Google ram air tide not working.....it’s crazy

Dealers are told to call it something else.

Basically a death wobble scenario.

There was a different shop running E50 tune only doing 12.4's. And I could have sworn @Livernois Motorsports was running 12's tune only

I just went through this, and have had my 18' F150 5.0 for coming up on a year in November.

Unfortunately mine drank 3-4 qts (no oil on dipstick) in the first 4k miles. I started the TSB, and have hit 9400 miles on the OE motor. It's sitting about 2 quarts low, so obviously it's slow down. The only gripe I have is it's a noisey motor. It ticks and taps like no other, to the point people mention it to me. Also, the 10 speed is clunky and does have it's moments where I say "WTF are you doing".

Now with the bad covered, I can tell you hauling wise it has been fantastic. Comfort wise it's great (it's a sport with the captains buckets and full center console w/shifter). It rides great, handles great, it's nimble, and it's a panties peeler if I've ever had one for a truck. I get more compliments and love for it than I ever thought I would.

All i've done is Raptor wheels, tint, and leveled it. It's a 2wd, and yet it feels very capable with the e-locker. Plus it absolutely rips on the highway. I demolished a 3.7 S197 a while back that was being a douche. The ol' Coyote F150 took him to the woodshed.

I was 10 seconds away from buying a crewmax Tundra. Then I thought about it, and ended up with the Ford. The money difference was small, and I ended up with a nicer truck. But if I didn't buy the Ford, I'd of gone toyota or Z71 Chevy.

Ram-stay away from air ride
Ford- stay away from 5.4
Gm/chev- stay away from magnaride(ties into way to many systems) & the 8spd auto.

Other then that all would do what you need.

Zero problems with my air ride on the 19 in cold and hot weather. It’s great for loading up anything I’m hauling/towing, great for people to get in and out of with entry/exit mode.

18k miles since last December and I’d buy the air ride without a hesitation again. Then again air ride isn’t exactly new technology.

That’s what I would expect from a tuner company running a truck at track.

Max effort nothing less

Just went thru this in the past few months. Wanted to get out of our 08 F250 after 5.5 years. Was tired of the rough ride around town and it wouldn't fit in my garage at the new house. After much consideration I ended up with a 16 3.5 EB. Personally I didn't want the 10 speed because of some of the issues I had read about. I wanted a 15+ 3.5 EB or a 15-17 5.0 with the 6 speed.

Been towing my 24' boat all summer thru the TX hill country. It's not as good as my F250 was but to be honest it isn't far off. Main thing is the rear suspension travel while towing. It's not bad but I'm going to add helper bags to get it how I want it. Truck is F'n quick and we get 17.5 city MPG. Get about 11 towing the boat. Sport mode is fun as hell too.

I like our ‘15 F150 CC/6.5’ with the 5.0 for 95% of the stuff we do with it.

But if I was planning on a boat of any real size, I’d probably lean toward the 3.5 EB equipped. The 5.0 just doesn’t make gobs of low end. I notice a pretty good lack of grunt in the lower rpm range with just a couple thousand pounds in a trailer.

(On another note, anyone modifying the new limited trucks with the raptor spec 3.5?)
