I wanna project for the winter months that aren't all that far away. I wanna build an AR platform prolly in 300 blackout (not sure on caliber yet though)

Talk to me...what all do I need and where do I need to look...looking to spend a grand plus or minus 100 bucks. I figure I can build a pretty solid rifle for around 1000 bucks

I already own 2 ARs...and armalite and a ruger 556.

Tks gents

My best advice is to spend money on the barrel (Ballistic Advantage, Faxon, BCM), BCG (BCM, Toolcraft, FailZero) and trigger (Geissele, Timney, Rise).

The receiver set, handgaurd, buffer tube, etc can all be had for good deals at places like PSA, Tom's Tactical, Midway, and Primary Arms.

Also, keep money aside for a good optic, nobody likes shooting a $1000 AR with stupid flip up iron sights.

$1000 will get you a decent rifle but the money will be spent pretty quickly once you start adding up all the parts up. I'd start with a quality upper such as BCM or Daniel Defense, the MK18 is pure sex while the 16 BCM light weight is bad ass for the price. Lowers are almost all the same it all depends on what design you want to have, it's the LPK that matters along with if you want a drop in trigger which adds some coin to the build. You didn't mention whether you wanted glass or not because glass alone can cost as much as the damn rifle.
Check out this sites for some upper options

Uppers | Daniel Defense

For parts you can never go wrong with the following
MidwayUSA - Shop Shooting, Hunting, & Outdoor Products
Ammunition, AR15 Parts, Magazines, Bulk Ammo - Palmetto State Armory
AR-15 & AK-47 Parts & Accessories | Primary Arms
Gun And Rifle Accessories. Supplier Of Gun Parts, Ammunition, Optics

While you are at it you may as well look into whether or not you want to SBR the rifle. SBR 300 Blackout is balls to the wall especially if you throw a can on it.

Aero precision also has builder kits which include the upper, lower and handguard. If I remember correctly, they were like 40% off for Black Friday last year.
I would bookmark or download the app for gun.deals as you can get a day by day summary of sales and closeouts.

Good point @Dip Dungles, if going with 300 blackout I would just build the AR as a "pistol" and use an SB Tactical brace setup instead of a buttstock, and get a 9 to 11 inch barrel.

There are some good forums out there to breeze through for good information as well. As most have said, you can build a pretty decent gun for 1K, glass will be additional. Some things to think about are what do you want to do with this gun or what is its intended purpose? One thing only? Target and defense? Don't spend a bundle on a trigger if the furthest you will shoot is 50 yards. I hope you get the idea. I put a Wilson Combat upper on a Bushmaster lower, Timney trigger, PRS stock, etc. But its sole purpose is long range varmint. Good luck with your search,

My main purpose is a range rifle. I would say defense but it will be locked up at home. I have another firearm for home defense. A good friend of mine has told me aero precision.

Just a heads up, if you ever want to sell a self built AR you won't get much out of it and they are much harder to sell in my experience.

I would recommend buying a quality AR from BCM. Super high quality, excellent fit and finish, and a great veteran owned company overall. I bought a Recce 16 from them for 1,300. They have several different calibers including .300 blackout. Also, if you are not going to be shooting suppressed alot, .300 isn't worth all the hype. People don't understand that if you don't know what you are doing/building you can mess things up. To each his own though.

What is the max distance of your range. If indoor, what calibers do they allow?

Indoor I believe is 100 yards i take an AR15 there as well as handguns. I think they cut of at 7.62. Outdoor is closed for another few months they’re rebuilding and modernizing the range it’s a different facility I frequent so I’m not sure what all the updates are I believe it’s 150 yards.

Ive got an Aero Precision M5 upper/lower combo ready for a build... someday. They are some of the choicest parts you can get.

I purchased 6 Anderson lowers a few years, all of them from were machined from Cerro Forge units. Built 2 rifles from that batch so far and zero reliability or build issues.

I built an AR10 on the M5 platform. The only weird thing was the mag release took an extended version. With normal one the magazine would fall out when the bolt cycled turning it into a single shot weapon.

Go piston. DI is crapping where you eat. :)

Faxon makes an awesome 300BLK upper in the ARAK series. Adjustable gas return. Excellent for suppressors. It's not cheap but it's definitely rare. Lowers are a dime a dozen. Spend the money on a good trigger group, upper, and optic. I built my ARAK21 for about $1800 plus optic. Worth it. Waiting on a Form 4 from January 2016 to get approved by the ATF so I can get a suppressor slapped on it. My other ones went through, one is still in limbo for some reason.

I would love to have a suppressor but I don't want to give the ATF a reason to blatantly knock on my door and tell me to produce a suppressor and paperwork. Hopefully the Hearing Protection Act bill will get put through at some point to make the paperwork for suppressor not necessary and the only needed is a regular NICS background check.
