Let me inform you, the crate Coyote engines require a $1500 wiring harness. If you can get a good buy on a pull out Coyote engine, you still need to buy the Ford Performance harness. Get the donor harness, if it is included with the engine, but a nightmare to sort out. A computer and drive by wire throttle pedal is included in the Performance wiring kit. Unless you just have to have a Coyote, a push rod engine is way cheaper and easier to complete. Most of the current generation cannot tune a carb. If that is the case, throttle body fuel inj is good, but can be 10 times the cost of a carb.

Yea when I looked prior it seemed the 1500 was well worth it for the Ford performance harness set up. Price pending I’d likely go with a low mile used coyote set up. If I ever want more power down the road it’s easy to pick a boost set up but for a weekend cruiser that’s light I doubt it would be of concern. Also boost would snow ball fast lol

I know used for engines is t everyone’s favorite but I can get a 18 5.0 engine with 20k miles from LKQ for 5800 per their site and that’s before calling to find out what my cost is on one. It likely may benefit me to source the whole drivetrain and rear IRS myself when pricing everything.

The IRS carrier is good, hopefully with gears and trac loc or better. The brakes might be usable, would have to check. Half shafts, need to check also. Some transmissions are longer and require a driveshaft other than what Factory 5 includes. If you get a deal on the drive line, check on which trans do not require mods to fit.

I’d love to do one eventually. I want it to be as true to original as possible though. patina’d and big block and top loader. Something resembling a barn find that was raced and stored.

I’d have to look more, I did see a couple rear ends from a GT350. Also saw a few GT350 engines for 9-10k, I wonder if one of them would work.

The nice thing about it is I can load up the kit from them how I’d like it and order it and if I feel I need a brake from spending I can just stop. I wouldn’t be in a major rush to build this as I’m limited to really a couple solid hours a week of spare “me” time. I would expect to budget about a calendar year for build time frame maybe longer.
I have followed some of the build threads and at 2hours a week you don’t have enough time to build the car. You should go to the factory five forum and read some of the build threads.
Good luck if you decide to do this.

Maybe I’m exaggerating, but last car I built I did the same. A few hours a weekend and maybe a little time here or there during the week and it got done. Obviously this is building from scratch but based on what I’ve seen, it’s nothing outside of my wheel house. Also it wouldn’t just be me, my brother would help a lot as he too enjoys building cars.

First priority is parts list to get a general price idea. Then sell the idea to the wife lol

The only negative I have on the table right now is it’s a two seater. The problem I run into is with a second baby on the way, what if I want to take both my children somewhere in the fun car. So that will be a big weight I factor in as I pursue this further.

I understand wanting to build your own Cobra kit, it would be fun and a nice challenge and not to mention you build it the way you want too. My personal thinking is the cost of building your own vs buying a car completed, you can buy a nice Cobra recreation for 40K and still have money left over to change some details if you like. If you can do everything yourself the cost would be much better as labor will add up quickly and if you do your homework you can find a very nice complete car that is well built.

Ditto but I dream of doing a 289 FIA Cobra. As I've gotten older, I enjoy seeing the 289 body more since I've seen tons of 427 cars over the years.

I've contemplated building a Cobra too but the costs & lack of free time always stop me in my tracks.

My dad has always been the proponent of buying someone else's project for cents on the dollar too. I think this is good advice. I think the trick is finding one where someone didn't yet do a hatchet job on anything.

One of my parents neighbors has an original ‘62 with a 260. Definitely different than the comp cobra but Ive always been in love with the big blocks.

I 100% get the value of buying someone else’s project, but I have zero desire for that. I’ll either build one or move on completely.

I shopped 289 Cobra kits and rollers. They are scarce, regardless of the builder. I don’t know why there isn’t more demand for them. The 427 cars get all the attention.

I really want to build a Type 65 coupe at some point. Even just putting in a Coyote from a 2011-14 F-150 in one would be plenty of power to have fun.

There is a channel on youtube doing a build on one with a turbo Coyote, .

SnapOn also built one for Joey Logano,
And the Gen III kits are much roomier
