I bought back my brother's first car(2004 GT 2.1KB) as a daily to my Cobra. It has a factory remote start and has a weird issue. The car will no longer start with the key but starts just fine with the remote start. Once started, I can put the key in and drive off. I've rewired a lot of my cobra but never dealt with a factory remote start. Does anyone know where to start?

I dont believe there was a factory remote start, may have been a Ford alarm that also adds remote start.
My first guess would be the chip in the key is bad. It's using the chip installed with the alarm to remote start it and then your key is just unlocking the steering wheel.
If you put your key in do you get dashes on the odometer and rapidly flashing theft light? If it's a PATS issue the motor will turn over all day long but won't start because the fuel pump won't come on. If you don't have 2 more working keys you won't be able to program a new one yourself, if this is the problem make sure you have 3 working keys. This way if you loose one you still have 2 more and that will let you program another new one yourself.

auto or stick? Some aftermarket companies install remote starts on standards but I don't believe dealers do.
its an auto. i believe it was a dealer option as he bought the car new with the remote start.
yep, so it turns out the key that has the correct chip broke so my cousin(the seller) was using the original ford key which does not have the correct chip. I guess i have to go to the dealer to get spare keys made? I believe you need 2 working keys to code extras.
you can order yourself a moates quarterhorse and just disable theft. That would probably be the cheaper option and easier in the long term. Its only $250 total vs. whatever is cost to buy a key, get it cut, and have it programmed.
I have the one I used in my cobra so I'll just get another j3 chip to burn the gt tune once I disable the pats.
if you keep PATS you can get a key with a chip anywhere but need a dealer or locksmith to program them. Yes, you need 2 working ones to program a new one.
i'm in luck. i found the key with the working chip but the key itself is broken. I will need to get one nonchipped key. I can program additional keys using the remote start unit as one chip and the broken key with a nonchipped key as a second working key. Thanks all!
