$650k+ IMO

I make low 6 figures and feel poor (bay area), and my buddy made almost $500k last year at PG&E and made me feel even more poor, and I wouldn't consider him upper class by any means. He says they just hired a bunch of people and he won't be getting the same OT any more and will "only" make like $200k. I wouldn't really be too comfortable with anything honestly as long as I'm still working for a paycheck instead of bringing in my own residual income, but it's going to be a while before I'm at that level

Holy shit, a 60% cut in pay would be rough.

BTW I'm a sales manager at a Nissan store right now, if you want to hire me for "high 6 figures" I'm all ears :D

I responded to “If I told you I was going to hire you and pay you a high six figure income, would you assume it's $150-199k or $600k+?”

There is no comprehensive or cognitive issues here. There is also no one making 600k+ at your dealership besides maybe the owner. So if you were to hire anyone it would be on the low end of six figures in a dealership environment hiring scenario. My response was appropriate.

finance managers at big dealerships make some bank around here, 400K at some of the bigger lux chains isn't out of the norm.

In his business he has to be a saver because of the inconsistency of OT, plus he gets a lot of retirement benefits. He lives in a modest house, drives a used Hellcat and Suburban, but does have 5 kids so that probably costs a pretty penny

I have higher hopes for you. lol

Let's try this.

What would you consider a "low six digit income"? Keep in mind, this number that you come up with has NOTHING to do with the actual value or purchasing power of the number...just solely a number.

$100k

I would "assume" $150k - $199K. To me, that's a high six figure income.
Anything over $200K is a very high six figure income. To me anyways.

Not picking on you but I believe this is what Nick is pointing at for this thread.

For whatever reason, a lot of people assume "6 figures" is 100k-200k, any more than that you talk in quarter, half, three-quarter million. It's like a bragging thing.

But if you take a step back and look at it, 6 figures is a very wide range.

If you asked someone how much they make and they said "low 5 figures" you'll assume $10k-$30K. If you ask another person the same question and they say "high 5 figures" you'll assume $80-$99K.

No one in the entire world thinks "high 5 figures" refers to $18k-$19.9k.

At the dealer i used to work at they maybe broke 70k...

That’s weak for finance manager, not talking about one of his direct reports etc...Seriously no incentive at all, he’d make more as a decent sales guy. FWIW I am in Harris county, Houston area, there are a zillion big chain dealerships here all competing with each other.

Why is OP so set on making everyone believe his way? Someone meme Greta yelling about high 6 figures...

I’m pretty analytical, so I immediately looked at it as the low/mid/high curve.
(100-400/400-700/700+)

My wife and I make roughly 160-180 in our current situation, and in Northeastern Indiana thats enough to live very comfortably.

That's ridiculous. Finance guys can make a fortune. A lot of stores, they make more than the dealer pays himself.

Whether 160-180k is comfortable or not, it has no bearing on it being a low six figure income (pointed out by the low/mid/high curve you provided).

OP isn't trying to make every one see anything his way. Just curious to why we limit our thinking on analytical things with our emotion attached to it.

I didn’t say 160-180 had any bearing on the discussion. I just wanted to brag about what I made so everyone who makes less knows they’re inferior and not as good of people.

On a serious note, emotion dictates a lot of what humans do. Whether it’s smart or not is another story.

I’m going to pose this question to my wife but using “single digits” and “penis length”. Probably going to end poorly when she realizes I’m not sufficient...

Please report back.

This is actually a very interesting subject. It would be fun to write an opinion article about it. (money, not penis length)
