Wish the 7.3L would be an option in the F150. Too bad ford cant hear us.

I do like the power of the 3.5L EB. Tq in any gear.

I keep being told that these EB’s need lots of mechanical attention, as in, they need constant repairs. Can anyone shed light on this?

The 1st gen was like that 2011-early 2013s. But since the 2015 the 3.5EB been good. My friend has over 80k on his 2016 fx4 and been problem free

What they need is a lot of preventative maintenance just like pretty much all newer engines do. Most people dont take well enough care of their vehicles and then they brake down and it gets blamed on the engines. There are definitely design flaws no doubt but with a lot of Ford's engines a lot of the ones we see come in with major issues could have probably been prevented if they were taken care of better. The 3V 5.4s for example, fail because oil changes aren't done regularly and the oil eventually doesn't reach where it needs to and so that is why the cam phasers have issues and the motors need to be replaced. I have customers with 3V motors who have a 100-200k miles on them and they change the oil religiously using only certain oils and filters and they dont have a single tick when it runs. The same goes for a lot of these EB motors. You really need to be in tune with what is going on with it and you need to change the timing chain at 65-75k miles because those are proving to be a problem too but that is a regular service interval item that needs to be paid attention to.

Most cars with issues that come in could have been avoided if people did real maintenance but we obviously know that people aren't like that and will let things break first before they fix them. You have to be pretty anal to be on top of all of it, and vehicles to an extent should be trouble free for the owners.

My 04 5.4 had 137K on it, no issues. The oil was changed at 5K religiously with a OEM filter. We have a few older 2.7’s at work with close to 100K, no issues, but again, oil and filter are changed at 5K.

Yep, my 04 5.4 V8 was great. Have you driven a newer EB? Serious question.

Of the current body style, no. Of the last one, yes. I was not particularly impressed. It was ok, but nothing stellar. What I cannot get past is the sound. It's an ok motor for an Explorer or a Taurus, but not a full sized truck.

Wouldn't give up my 3.5TT for a V8. That motor just laughs at grades when driving out West.

I’ll agree on the sound, but as I sit inside and don’t hear any outside, it’s great. This 18 I have runs like a raped ape stock.

Doing that should keep you in the clear for a long time. Those engines go bad when the far parts of the engine get starved for oil.

The plugs, that’s a different story. lol

Yeah, that is all on Ford with the plugs.

I had posted about this, all 8 broke on mine. 6 hours to change plugs with the Lisle tool.

Don't know anymore
I have a 2018 2.7 eb and have had zero issues with it. I average almost 22 mpg and I'm not easy on it. I do run 93 as it's more fun than running 87. It is the most surprising motor I've ever had in stock form and I've had 2 terminators. If you dont do a ton of towing and need a truck, I highly recommend the 2.7 over the 3.5 just based on gas mileage.

I want more owner reviews of 19+ Limited owners with the Raptor Spec 3.5

I think that motor would be a LOT of fun in a lot of different platforms.
